Stephenie Meyer Apologizes to Fans

46 Comments August 15, 2013 by Filed Under: Stephenie Meyer

On August 13, an article in Variety Magazine caused some uproar with some Twilight fans when Stephenie Meyer was quoted as saying

I get further away every day. I am so over it [Twilight]. For me, it’s not a happy place to be.

Some thought she was being ungrateful to the fans so Stephenie issued an apology via her blog to clarify her statement

Hi everyone,

I’m just back from my short publicity tour for Austenland, and very glad to be home with my boys. I hope you all are having a wonderful summer with your families, and that you have a few more weeks to enjoy (unlike Arizona, where we were back to school last week).

With all the travelling, I only just heard about the current controversy, and I am both surprised and dismayed. I am horrified that my words could be construed in any way to mean that I am “over” the lovely people who embraced Twilight, made it such a huge hit, and changed my life. The time I’ve spent with my fans has been one of the most precious gifts of this whole experience and I will certainly never forget them or think of them with anything but immense gratitude. I was lucky enough to see a few of them Tuesday night at the Apple “Meet the Filmmakers” event, and they were so lovely! I’m always surprised and touched that people still care about my stories.

Any of you who have ever watched me answer a question live, especially to an indulgent inquirer like a fansite, know that I do tend to go on. Though I try to be as concise as possible to make editing easier for whichever news outlet I’m working with, I’m (still) not very good at it. If you look at the Variety article, you’ll notice that I’m speaking in very short statements. Of course, I didn’t actually. I spoke in run-on paragraphs and made the poor, sweet man who interviewed me comb through painstakingly trying to find a few completed sentences that he could use to convey the idea of what I was saying. Unfortunately, in shortening the interview to a usable size, some of the meaning of what I was trying to say was lost, and I believe the statements I made ended up sounding much more harsh than I meant them.

Even those of you who love Twilight the most (in fact, especially those who love it the most) have probably noticed that there’s been just a teensy little bit of backlash following the success of the books and films. I try my hardest to be thick-skinned, but I’m not much better at that than I am at brevity. So when I speak of Twilight becoming a negative place for me, it is entirely that near-omnipresent Twilight antipathy that I am speaking of. And I’m not complaining or saying it’s unfair—I totally understand and even empathize with its existence. I’m just saying that Twilight isn’t the wholly positive place for me that it once was.

Also, in regards to being “over it,” I will admit, it’s getting harder to answer the same questions about Twilight that I’ve been answering for the past decade (especially when I’m so excited to talk about Austenland). I can only imagine you are just as over reading those same answers. And the little bit about posting which characters died? That was referring to a solemn oath I made years and years ago to some cool fans. I swore I would not take to my grave the ideas I had for future stories, even if all I could to was list the outcomes in bullet points.

So please, never think I don’t appreciate the people who read, watch, and love Twilight. I am grateful for your existence every single day. Thanks for the most amazing decade!

Well to begin with I am so blessed that I became apart of this fandom
I never thought that when the Harry Potter Saga ended that I would have that spark again of getting into a another book series and as I have said(when I told the story of discovering the twi series) when I finished reading the last book of HP I was so bummed out and depressed and also desperate to read anything
and *fate*(as well as sheer desperation) brought me to Target that day
and I looked down at these books one with the pale hands(holding the apple) and I picked it up looked at it and to this day I thank *fate*, and sheer desperation and to this day I do thank Stephanie for putting so much passion into her writing of the stories I just wish she had the passion when putting the movies together and at least try in keeping the movies as close to the books as possible but when there is a incompetent screen writer who tweaks everything and butchers the stories well that kills it for me and I just wish SM didn’t turn into a *Hollywood Machine* and the only reason why I became a fan was because of the books and the characters that I have instantly fallin in love with I wish Alice lived next door to me LOL but seriously I am so thankful that she brought the characters to life and when Rob made his *famous and historical* entrance in the scene where he is walking thru the cafeteria I knew I had found my calling so to speak and the most BEAUTIFUL man in the world, Robert Pattinson they could NOT have picked a better man to play the part and also to all the nay sayers and doubters HAH! here is a bowl of crow for ya!
and now the cast has moved on and they are all grown up and evolving into more mature projects in films and to all the cast, crew, Stephanie,
thank you so much for making me feel like a woman all over again :)

  • Mastequilla

she is lies to save the fat pay check she gets. she got caught , and now she is back tracking.

  • mirandathevampgirl

    Dear Stephanie,
On behalf of all of us twue blue fans who are forever grateful for all the things you have done for us all these years, we FORGIVE you.

I think too often we for

  • Mary Pat

THank you for trying to “watergate” your way out of what you said. I have heard that you have said this same thing before. Actually, if it had not been for the Twilight fans you would be a unknown housewife who blogs her stories on the net. You tried to hawk The Host on the coat tails of Twilight and it did not stand on its own. If you really want to back track what you said with any sort of credibility then finish up the Twilight story or finish Midnight Sun. I think that you do owe the fans even if you have no genuine regard for them other than as revenue generators.

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyHeart★BTB®

Bite the hand that feeds you then try to kiss and make up. NOT COOL!

I will forgive you Step but ONLY when MS IS RELEASED! Deal?

Hmmm…. I just realized SM’s initials are MS backwards. There are no coincidences!

  • mirandathevampgirl

Only time will tell when that day comes dont give up hope

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyHeart★BTB®

I’ll never give up hope! I still remember how all of us were kicking-n-screaming for the offical guide and we finally got it. I’m just praying that MS is in that same category.

  • Amber Eyes

Sorry Steph, not buying it. Not buying the phony apology made AFTER you realized how offended your fans were made by it. Why don’t you just use the expression everyone in Hollywood seems to make after a stupid statement finds it’s way out of their mouths……”Sorry, I mis-spoke.” I’m also not buying the new dvd set coming in November. I have all the dvd’s and the books and am happy with my lot. It doesn’t come as any surprise that this set is being released, anyone with half a brain could figure it was coming as a final money grab when there were no deleted scenes included in the BD 1&2 discs. I imagine they’ll be placed on the new dvd’s to serve as a carrot to dangle in front of us. I’ll keep my $65 thank you very much, and watch the scenes on You Tube for free when they inevitably get uploaded.

“Twilight” is still a happy place for me. I love forgetting about the daily grind and entering that world for a while. Whether I read a few pages in one of my books, or sit down and watch a few scenes of a dvd, those moments I steal for myself are great. Being in Bella and Edward’s world is great escapism, and I never get tired of it, amazingly. The love of the story and the characters is something my daughter and I share, and it is our own special bond. Something my husband and son don’t get, and it doesn’t matter. They have hockey and video games, we have Twilight.

And “it’s getting harder to answer the same questions about Twilight that I’ve been answering for the past decade”? Boo-hoo. Maybe you can dry off some of your tears with the stacks of cash you’ve made because of it. I’d gladly answer the same questions over and over to have the wealth you do, which incidentally came from us, all of us. Never bite the hand that feeds you. Were it not for the fans, your vampire love story would never have seen the light of day. Check yourself Stephenie, and learn to think before you speak.

  • Mary Pat

Well said. I really feel betrayed by SM….worse, I feel as if she is laughing at us and thinks very little of us. This whole lip service apology seems very ingenuous and self serving. I love the Twilight saga. But let’s face it, it isn’t great literature or prose. It wasn’t the writing ability that we enjoyed but rather the story of Bella and Edward.

So, Stephenie, you are so over Twilight. Are you also over the mountain of our money? Or is it the fame of being an A lister? Or are you just sick of those bothersome fans that have given you a lifestyle that few of us will ever enjoy? I am disgusted.

  • mirandathevampgirl

    Who knows

  • mirandathevampgirl

No matter what happens no matter how many new stories or characters I fall in love with or what anyone says I will always love Twilight it is forever in my heart and soul and in my imagination and dreams

  • ILoveRob

We will get Midnight Sun as soon as the money from Twilight starts to dry up. That’s why she is holding off putting it out.

  • janet

Wow nothing like burning your bridges & then trying to get back across. Won’t work. Funny thing is someone just tweeted me a bunch of interviews Taylor Lautner just did in the Philippines (God he looks good). They asked him lot of Twilight questions & well he’s just a classy guy…Stephanie could learn from him.

  • Mastequilla

DM: What about a return to “Twilight?”

SM: I get further away every day. I am so over it. For me, it’s not a happy place to be.

DM: Is the door completely closed on that?

SM: Not completely. What I would probably do is three paragraphs on my blog saying which of the characters died. I’m interested in spending time in other worlds, like Middle-Earth.

  • leahreallyitis

I agree that is so true and Taylor is lookin good It seems like yesterday he was only fifteen now he is almost 21! *~* how time flies

  • leahreallyitis

I would not be surprised at all seriously we all be in a home by the time MS comes out seriously! LOL

  • Mary Pat

I am very disappointed with the three largest beneficiaries of the franchise. Disappointed in SM for her incredible disdain for the fans, disappointed in Kristen and Rob for their general lack of class and integrity. They are definitely of a much lower calibre than the characters they portrayed. Pity. Taylor, Nikki, Emmett and Ashley all seem to be of better fibre. Very disappointed indeed.

  • leahreallyitis

beautifully said! I could not have said it better myself! but she is *trying* to redeem herself she put out the twilight graphic novel(volume one and two) and also she has(recently) released the New Moon graphic novel volume one and volume 2 will be out next year(july 29th 2014) so once again she is trying to redeem herself because she KNOWS she screwed up by hiring Rosenberg to write for the Saga and knowing that us fans were very disappointed in her writing skills which she lacked(when writing for the Saga) she kept tweaking everything and did SM doing anything about it oh haaaaallle NO she did not she just sat there and saw dollar signs she has turned into a hollywood machine this is why I give MR an F and SCUMSH*T and SM for hiring this talentess HACK and I give the movies a C minus the books I definitely give an A+ the only reason why I became a fan was because of the books, the characters, and the cast but the writing was a joke that is for sure and the only reason why I saw the movies(and have them) is because of the cast and that is it

  • leahreallyitis

O/T have you seen the DIOR pics of Rob?! go take a look on robsessed the man is a walking panty wetter!

  • leahreallyitis

uh his name is Kellan Lutz his characters name is Emmett and PLEASE explain to me why you think Rob has no class or integrity and the rest of the cast as well because I DON’T agree with you so ya know what if you can’t say something respectful then don’t say it!! and as for SM yeah she did fk up BUT ROB IS A CLASSY GUY AND HE DOES HAVE INTEGRITY!! he has always been VERY grateful and appreciative!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh what?! do you expect him to stay a teen idiol is that it?! and to show up at those GOD AWFUL JOKE of an award shows like the TCA’s honey he has been there DONE that and he is so done with it he has made every SINGLE appearance on every SINGLE award show, talk shows, you name it and he has always done it with class and integrity! and continues to STILL do it with class and integrity!! he is 27 years old for godsake!! and he has moved on to much more sophisticated film projects when has he EVER been an ingrate when has he EVER lacked class or integrity NAME ONE THING!!! go ahead enlighten me!! but will I agree with you HELL NO

  • Monique/booksaddicted

There she is… ROCK ON Leah baby/ :-D

  • leahreallyitis

I try LOL this *so called fan*(as I use the term loosely) is not a fan and also Rob is not a phoney nor is he an ingrate and he has worked very very hard to finally gain the respect that he so deserves and yet this *so called fan* accuses him of being an ingrate and has no class really?!

  • leahreallyitis

wooooo *gasps* I got an down arrow HA ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

  • leahreallyitis

oh thank you hon DAMN then he is going to be 22! *~*

  • Maybird36

Not an ounce of phoney ness in his whole body I agree with you – cannot imagine why people keep on throwing filth his way – if you cant say anything nice then don’t say anything at all – SHUT UP!!!!! LOL

  • scarlett71177

Thank you for being the voice of reason here. It’s easy to jump on the bandwagon and condemn her, but we don’t know what it’s like to be badgered and asked the same questions over and over. And I’m 100% sure the magazine cut her statements to make it seem more ‘controversial’ than it was. That’s what sells magazines and gets attention. I think it’s okay for SM to be ‘over it,’ but I definitely think there’s a nicer way to say that. I remember Rowling got into the same trouble when Harry Potter was over too. She said very similar things. I imagine it’s frustrating to want to move on with life but everyone else is hung up on what you’ve already finished. HOWEVER, the books, movies, and fandom for us is a very different experience. We invite it into our life. We make friends because of it, we donate to charity because of it, we make it our own through art and fanfic. I think authors forget what that kind of excitement, passion, and fun are like for us fans. They’d do well to remember it and be grateful for it.

  • leahreallyitis

*high five sista friend*! exactly!! I guess this mary pat is too big of a chicken to tell me why Rob has no class or integrity I’m still waiting for her to explain to me why she thinks that of course I am right and she is WROOOONG !!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

Taylor is very gracious in his interviews, especially regarding his time filming Twilight and his appreciation of the fans. I think it’s ok to reference Twilight, they can’t at as thou it didn’t exist, but not let it be the focus of future interviews with other projects.

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

None of us mere morals are perfect, and having said that SM, Rob or Kristen have never tried to portray or sale their lives as being perfect people. They are, who they are, flaws and all. As regarding the rest of the cast I love them to, and their lives have not been perfect either, as we all well know. They are just more fortunate, not to have their lives under the same intense 24/7 media scrutiny, as Rob and Kristen’s is.

  • maessy

The trouble SM has with Twilight is that it has taken a life of its own, much like Star Trek did. No one can suffocate or kill Twilight….its alive, buah hsaida ha ha!!!!!! Twilight captured the reader and movie goer’s imagination as nothing has, since Harry Potter. I enjoyed Harry Potter very much, but did not feel as obsessed with it, as I did with Twilight. I LOVE the world of Twilight, that means that new characters and new plot lines could go on forever…like Star Trek. For a fantasy series to capture the attention of a hard core sci-fi reader like me says a lot about the world created within the series. SM can say anything she wants against Twilight Fans, but its not going to change the fans….may make her look like an unclassy author, but the fan base and the Twilight world remains the same. Remember that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy weren’t too crazy about the Start Trek fan base that would not “get a life”, but finally, twenty or thirty years later…the fan base is still strong and the two main actors did a turn around on how they treated their fans.

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

Miranda you said that beautifully, and I feel the same way. The way I interpreted SM words, that it wasn’t Twilight it’s felt she was over, but the hype and ugliness that sometimes surrounds it and I can she why that is not a happy place to be. I hope one day she will again find it, her happy place, just as it is very much, our happy place and escape.

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

I never got that SM didn’t like or appreciate the fans, but didn’t get how obsessed the fans got and continue to be, with Twilight. I remember her saying how caught up she was in Twilight and that world at the time she was writing it, it was her escape and happy place. Then after it was published it became more like work and The Host became the escape from the escape, so I get it. She just needs to rethink her phrasing, when she speaks. Stephenie has always been pretty blunt and it can sometimes come of as uncaring or cold, but I find it hard to believe that is who she is to people who know the real her. At least that’s what I hope.

  • twilight_girl

your spot on girl. I couldn’t agree more with u. steph has always been very supportive and friendly with her fans. I think people need to lay off and appreciate what she has done for us.

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

Yeah, people just need to continue to love Twilight and leave the outside forces and negativity behind.

  • Bruce Wayne

I’ve never been this disappointed in an author. Stephenie Meyer had always seemed like a sweetheart. I’m deeply sadden that because of the negative people, the fans won’t get any more Twilight stories. She has stated many times that she wanted to continue the story, but now we’ll never know what happens next. It’s like Midnight Sun all over. She lets a few people mess everything up for everyone else. That is being a coward. Suck up the criticism and move on. It doesn’t matter who hates your books, what matters is who loves them.

  • More_than_My_Own_Life

    Agree 100%

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

  • leahreallyitis

*nods head in agreement* that is so true and Taylor is a cool guy that is for sure and I wish him nothing but the best and happiness as well :)

  • OhEdward-The Original

The content of what you said makes sense. But I always wonder how you are able to type such long, thought out posts without punctuation to end your sentences. That is the longest sentence I have ever read in my life. :-)
