New Mexico Mom Jailed for Twilight Checkout from Library

18 Comments June 30, 2012 by Filed Under: Twilight

An unfortunate set of circumstances led to the arrest of New Mexico resident Lori Teel after not returning a Twilight book and New Moon DVD to the library. She spent a night in jail.

Teel was arrested and handcuffed at her Portales home in front of her five small children earlier this month because of $35.98 worth of library materials allegedly taken out and not returned, according to a tort claim notice sent to the Portales city clerk on Monday [...] “Honestly, it was awful,” Teel said of the arrest and her night in the Roosevelt County Detention Center. “For me, it was very awful because I have never been in trouble for anything in my life.”

Her children, ages 1 to 10, stayed in a neighbor’s home until Teel was released the following morning on $610 bond.

“My kids are still very emotional,” Teel said. “They had to stay with a complete stranger. My 3-year-old is traumatized over it. She will not leave my side.”

Wouldn’t she get some kind of notice or warning before arresting her?   Jeez.  And $35?  Why didnt they just fine her?  Wow not moving to New Mexico anytime soon.

    This is crazy

I saw this posted in another twilight website and this is what I think: “Ok thats just awful. I know its not right to not return the books but I’ve never returned some books either by mistake of I just moved and never got around to it. What I’m trying to say is arresting someone for over due fines is a bit extreme. I bet it cost more to arrest her and do all that paper work than what the actual amount is worth. It should have gone to small claims court.

And I’m not defending her cause she had Twilight books. I think its ridiculous no matter what book it was. I don’t know; I’ve never heard of anyone getting arrested for overdue books.

I feel sorry for because she was humiliated and shamed in front of of her children for $35 -_-”

I hope she and her kids can overcome the humiliation and traumatization they had to encounter.

That was what  I thought as well, bit extreme to arrest her just over that.

    Why?? That is so stupid

You would think there would have been some warning and THEN they would have sent her a bill for the merchandise.   Isn’t that what most libraries do for unreturned books/videos?   They just make you pay for them?   They don’t file charges!   Jeez!

Wtf?over a library fine.i think someone needs to explain what a collection agency is to this dumbass library.sheesh

This is the insanity of the world we live in. So pedophiles, rapists and murderers are released to just go out and commit the same crimes over and over, and this poor women gets arrested for a library book? I’m sorry, but these days nothing makes sense to me at all.

Okay so after reading the orginal story (and I’m not defending ANYONE here, I just want to get the facts straight) The late fees led to a court summons, which she didn’t show up to. (She never received the court summons because they went to the wrong address) Not showing up to court led to the arrest warrants. So technically she wasn’t arrested for the late fees but for NOT showing up to court. However I think that 35 dollars and change is a complete waste of money to have to go to court over. I mean I’ll buy the library a copy of the book and DVD for less than that. Good Grief!!!! How much tax money did they waste to humiliate this woman. I’m not saying she shouldn’t have to pay up her late fees or something but the punishment should fit the crime. Have her do community service at the library or something to pay off her bill if she doesn’t still have the books.

This lady is so stupid. If you look at the bigger picture, she should have just returned the book and DVD. She trying to make everyone feel bad for her…lol LADY YOUR FAULT YOU DIDN’T RETURN THE STUPID BOOK!!!!
If she wanted the book and movie that bad…just go to any second hand store and find it for $5 bucks…lesson learned for her i guess since she was finned at the end…
    wow.

  • Mary-pat

Incredible. Talk about the escalation of stupidly and waste.

That is just plain awful! And a $610 fine? That’s way to much for just a book!

What is happening to this world? She gets arrested? There are rapist, child molesters, living in our neighborhoods, and the government says it’s perfectly safe, but oh, oh, oh, imagine someone who forgot to return a book and a DVD! She’s harmfull to our great society, she will kill us with papercuts and hit us with her DVD!

    Gosh, some people! smh!!!!
