Welcome to the BreakingDawnMovie.org’s Community Re-read!

While we impatiently wait for Breaking Dawn Part 1 to be released, we continue with our highly-popular, Community Re-Read!

Every Tuesday & Friday, I’ll post a breakdown for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on November 18th. Let’s get started, dig out your copy of Breaking Dawn, read the chapters together with us, and discuss anything you may find of interest that you might have missed the first or twentieth time around. Let’s continue our journey into FOREVER.

Chapter 4: Gesture

“Jakes hands dropped to his sides, and then sudden gush of blood through my waiting veins was almost painful. Edward tensed in front of me. There were two enormous wolves braced between him and Jacob…”

The wedding is now over and the reception has begun. Bella and Edward are greeting their guests. Billy Black was escorted by Seth and Sue Clearwater. Billy and Seth were exceptionally cheerful while Sue stayed on guard. Let’s join the wedding reception already in progress.

Pg. 53-55 *Here we get the first glance into a building friendship between Seth Clearwater and Edward Cullen that has already built a firm foundation.  Seth leaned toward Edward, arms extended. Edward returned the hug with his free arm. I saw Sue shudder delicately. “It’s good to see things work out for you, man.” Seth said, “I’m happy for you.” “Thank you, Seth. That means a lot to me.” Edward pulled away from Seth and looked at Sue and Billy. “Thank you, as well. For letting Seth come. For supporting Bella today.”    *The line became very long so the newlyweds kept it moving saying their hello’s and thanks to friends and family, including the gang from Forks High! Apparently Jessica and Mike Newton are an item again…who knew! Lol.    Behind my human friends were my new cousins-in-law, the Denali vampire clan. I realized I was holding my breath as the vampire in front-Tanya, I assumed from the strawberry tint in her blond curls-reached out to embrace Edward. Next to her, three other vampires with golden eyes stared at me with open curiosity. One woman had long, pale blond hair, straight as corn silk. The other woman and the man beside her were both black-haired, with a hint of an olive tone to their chalky complexions. And they were all four so beautiful that it made my stomach hurt. Tanya was still holding Edward. “Ah, Edward. I’ve missed you.” “It’s been too long, Tonya. You look well.” “So do you.” “Let me introduce you to my wife.” It was the first time Edward has said that word since it was officially true; he seemed like he would explode with satisfaction saying it now. The Denalis all laughed lightly in response. “Tanya, this is my Bella.” Tanya was every bit of lovely as my worse nightmares had predicted. “Welcome to the family, Bella. We consider ourselves Carlisle’s extended family, and I am sorry about the, er, recent incident when we did not behave as such. We should have met you sooner. Can you forgive us?” “Of course,” I said breathlessly. “It’s so nice to meet you.” “We’ll get to know each other later. We’ll have eons of time for that!” Tanya laughed as she and her family moved on.

Pg. 55-57 *Edward and Bella take it to the dance floor!  And when the music started, Edward pulled me into his arms for the customary first dance. “Enjoying the party, Mrs. Cullen?” he whispered in my ear. I laughed. “That will take a while to get used to.” “We have a while,” he reminded me.  *The couple decides to switch dancing partners, their parents lol. Charlie gets all choked up and it’s so sweet!  “I’m going to miss you at home, Bella. I’m already lonely.” “I feel just horrible, leaving you to cook for yourself-it’s practically criminal negligence. You could arrest me.” He grinned. “I supposed I’ll survive the food. Just call me whenever you can.” “I promise.”  *Bella had the opportunity to dance with just about all her guests when her final dance partner basically ticks Edward off and he cuts in. Edward whisks Bella away from Mike Newton of all people lol, because of his improper thoughts. Then Edward takes a moment to bask in the beauty that is actually Bella.  “Have you had the chance to look at yourself?” “Um. No, I guess not why?” “Then I supposed you don’t realize how utterly, heartbreakingly beautiful you are tonight.” I’m not surprised Mike’s having difficulty with improper thoughts about a married woman. I am disappointed that Alice didn’t make sure you were forced to look in a mirror.” “You are very biased, you know.” He sighed and then paused and turned me around to face the house. The wall of glass reflected the party back like a long mirror. “Biased, am I?” I caught just a glimpse of Edward’s reflection-a perfect duplicate of his perfect face-with a dark-haired beauty at his side. Her skin was cream and roses, her eyes were huge with excitement and framed with thick lashes. Before I could blink and make the beauty turn back into me, Edward suddenly stiffened and turned automatically in the other direction, as if someone had called his name. “Oh!” he said. His brow furrowed for an instant and then smoothed out just as quickly. “What is it?” “A surprise wedding gift.” “Huh?”

Pg. 58-63Thank you,” Edward said to the darkness. “This is very kind of you.” “Kind is my middle name. Can I cut in?” My hand flew up to my throat, and if Edward hadn’t been holding me I would have collapsed. “Jacob! Jacob!” “Hey there, Bells.” I stumbled toward the sound of his voice. The heat from Jacob’s skin burned right through the thin satin dress as he pulled me close. He made no effort to dance; he just hugged me while I buried my face in his chest. He leaned down to press his cheek to the top of my head. “Rosalie won’t forgive me if she doesn’t get her official turn on the dance floor,” Edward murmured. *Sidebar-do you see what I mean? This is beyond inappropriate! And not even because it’s Jacob, it’s Bella. I firmly believe if she told Jake to stay far away from her, that he wouldn’t crash this wedding. But now as a married woman she still wants this boy around. It’s not cool; it’s not a newly married womanly thing to do! And it burns me inside and out. This has gone on waaaay too long and Edward sits there and tolerates this behavior, ok I get he feels it’s his fault because he left…I still haven’t forgiven him for that. But must he always pay the price by having Bella obsess over Jacob every waking moment? This is their wedding and Jacob’s presence is inappropriate and so is Bella’s behavior.    “Oh, Jacob.” I was crying now. “Thank you.” “Stop blubbering, Bella. You’ll ruin your dress. It’s just me.” “Just? Oh, Jake! Everything is perfect now.” “Yeah-the party can start. The best man finally made it.” “Now everyone I love is here.” I felt his lips brush my hair. “Sorry I’m late, honey.” “I’m just so happy you came!” “I don’t know if I get more than just this one dance. I’d better make the best of it. I’m glad I came,” Jacob said quietly after a moment. “I didn’t think I would be. But it’s good to see you…one more time. Not as sad as I thought it would be.”    *Jake and Bella discuss where he’d been and his travel back to Forks, and how being in his human form felt so weird, lol. Jacob then takes a moment to admire Bella’s beauty. “It would have been a shame to miss seeing you like this, though. That’s worth the trip right there. You look unbelievable, Bella. So beautiful.” His face turned serious. “Are you happy, Bella?” “Yes.” “Okay. That’s the main thing, I guess. Sam’s out there. And some of the others. Just in case, you know.” “In case of what?” “In case I can’t keep it together, something like that. In case I decide to trash the party.”  He flashed a quick smile at what was probably an appealing thought to him. “But I’m not here to ruin your wedding, Bella. I’m here to…” “Make it perfect.” “I’m just here to be your friend. Your best friend, one last time. I’ll give them this much,” he said. “They know how to throw a party.” “Alice is an unstoppable force of nature.” He sighed. “Song’s over. Do you think I get another one? Or is that asking too much.” “You can have as many dances as you want.” We turned in another circle “You’d think I’d be used to telling you goodbye by now.” Jacob looked at me and frowned. He wiped his fingers across my cheek, catching the tears there. “You’re not supposed to be the one crying, Bella.” “Everyone cries at weddings.” “This is what you want, right?” “Right.” “Then smile.”

Pg. 64-67 *Here things kind of take a wrong turn. While Bella is still dancing with Jake for an obscene amount of time at her wedding, things go south.    My relationship with Jacob used to be so easy. Natural as breathing. But since Edward has come back into my life, it was a constant strain. Because-in Jacob’s eyes-by choosing Edward; I was choosing a fate worse than death, or at least equivalent to it.  Sidebar- I totally disagree. If Bella would stop playing both sides there wouldn’t be this constant strain. Jacob after a few times truly seems to listen and he goes away and let’s them have their life. But Bella can’t leave well enough alone and Jake always comes running to her, he can’t help himself.    “What is it Jake? Just tell me.” “I-I don’t have anything to tell you.” “Oh, please. Spit it out.” “It’s not…it’s a question. It’s something I want you to tell me.” “Ask me.” “I shouldn’t. It doesn’t matter. I’m just morbidly curious.” “It’s not tonight, Jacob.” Jacob was even more obsessed with my humanity than Edward. “Oh. When?” he whispered. “I don’t know for sure. A week or two, maybe.” His voice changed, took on a defensive, mocking edge. “What’s the holdup?” “I just didn’t want to spend my honeymoon writhing in pain.” “You’d rather spend it how? Playing checkers? Ha ha.” “Very funny.” “Kidding, Bells. But, honestly, I don’t see the point. You can’t have a real honeymoon with your vampire so why go through the motions? This isn’t the first time you’ve put this off.” “I’m not putting anything off,” I snapped. “And yes I can have a real honeymoon! I can do anything I want! Butt out!”  *Oooh! Quite the temper there Bells, lol.  He stopped our slow circling abruptly. And then his eyes bulged wide with a strange kind of confused horror. “What?” he gasped. “What did you say?” About…what? Jake? What’s wrong?” “What do you mean? Have a real honeymoon? While you’re still human? Are you kidding? That’s a sick joke, Bella!” I glared at him. “I said butt out, Jake. This is so not your business. I shouldn’t have… we shouldn’t even be talking about this. It’s private-“ His enormous hands gripped the tops of my arms, wrapping all the way around, fingers overlapping. “Ow, Jake. Let go!” He shook me. “Bella! Have you lost your mind? You can’t be that stupid! Tell me you’re joking!” He shook me again. His hands, tight as tourniquets, were quivering, sending vibrations deep into my bones. “Jake-stop!” “Take your hands off her!” Edward’s voice was as cold as ice, sharp as razors. “Jake, bro, back away.” I heard Seth Clearwater urge. “You’re losing it. You’ll hurt her. Let her go.” “Now!” Edward snarled. And Seth-gangly, fifteen-year-old Seth-had his long arms around Jacob’s shaking body, and he was tugging him away. “C’mon, Jake. Let’s go.” “I’ll kill you,” Jacob said, his voice so choked with rag that it was low as a whisper. His eyes, focused on Edward, burned with fury. “I’ll kill you myself! I’ll do I’ll now!”  *Sam and Seth finally get their grips on Jacob and escort him from the reception. You all give me a LOT of flack over my comments about Jacob. This behavior is downright ridiculous. And Bella is the cause of this mess. In the past I blamed Jake on all things bad but you guys have shown me the error of my ways and I can admit that. However Jake is a flame and Bella is the fuel. And this is the kind of crap that happens when you throw these two together. Her crying and sobbing and this extra long dance with Jake isn’t appropriate. Let’s put the shoe on the other foot. Imagine it’s your wedding and your new spouse’s ex shows up and your spouse is there crying and dancing with this person…see my point?  Also, this is Bella’s wedding and here she is being assaulted by her best friend! How can this be excusable? And to top it all off Bella has the nerve to tell Jake SHE is sorry? Anyway let’s finish off this chapter, frankly I’ve had enough.

Pg. 70-73 *We end this chapter with all returning back to normal…whatever normal is. The guests were none the wiser about the fiasco with Jacob. The couple has their final dances say their goodbyes and head off to their honeymoon.   It turned out there were actually lots of people I hadn’t danced with, yet and that gave me a chance to truly compose and resolve myself. When Edward claimed me again, I found that the Jacob drawer was shut nice and tight. “I could get used to this.” I said. “Don’t tell me you’ve gotten over dancing issue?” “Dancing isn’t so bad-with you. But I was thinking more of this-“ and I pressed myself to him even tighter-“of never having to let you go.” I’d pretty much forgotten where I was when I heard Alice call, “Bella! It’s time!”    *After some hesitance, Bella, dragged by Alice heads upstairs to Renee and Esme to change into her travel dress. “Thank you, Alice. It was the most beautiful wedding anyone ever had. Everything was exactly right. You’re the best, smartest, most talented sister in the whole world.” That thawed her out; she smiled a huge smile. “I’m glad you liked it.”  After Bella is all dolled up, she heads downstairs to say her goodbyes.  My mother’s tears streamed without a break the entire time. “I’ll call you when I know where I’m going.” I promised as I hugged her goodbye. “You have to visit me and Phil very, very soon.” Renee said. “I love you, Mom. I’m so glad you have Phil. Take care of each other.” “I love you too, Bella, honey.” Edward was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. I took his outstretched hand but leaned away, scanning the little crowd that was waiting to see us off. “Dad?” “Over here,” Edward murmured. We found Charlie leaning awkwardly against the wall behind everyone else, looking a little like he was hiding. The red rims around his eyes explained why. “Oh, Dad!” I hugged him around the waist, tears streaming again-I was crying so much tonight. “There, now. You don’t want to miss your plane.” “I love you forever, Dad. Don’t forget that.” “You, too Bells. Always have, Always will. Call me,” “Soon.” I promised, knowing this was all I could promise. Just a phone call. My father and mother could not be allowed to see me again; I would be too different, and much, much too dangerous.

Ok that was a long dramatic chapter lol. Soo what are your thoughts about the guests? The Denali clan is so mysterious! How would’ve you reacted to Jake’s behavior. Did you think Sam was going to behave differently than he did? And Jake threatening to kill Edward…at the wedding?  Classy, Jake. Smh.

Hello EdwardsNana! Haven’t seen you in a while. You must be busy. :)

Hi Twigrandma, thank you for writing.  I don’t know why, but I seem to be out of the loop.  Some of my emails have gone to spam.  Been having some issues with my computer too. Thanks again.  I needed someone to miss me today.  But when I read about all the stuff some of our loved ones are going through, I feel so bad.  They are such brave and loyal moms.
I’ve been busy, like everyone, but I really try to spend time on line at night when I get home.
    Once again………..thank you.

Thats our Bella, she gets all defensive and stubborn when someone tells her, she can’t do something. Especially when it comes to Edward, she didn’t want Jacob, to give Edward any more reasons to get out of the honeymoon, she’s been waiting for.

Loved your comments twiheart. Jacob always underestimates our Edward, and his control.

I’m with you twigrandma. I want to see that too.

Lol. I can never remember which one of the two games he mentioned them playing either. I read it this morning and still can’t remember. Must be cause I suck at both. They’ve become interchangeable.

Hi LaurelLeaf, it is great to see you.   I think Bella had good instincts about not inviting Jacob to the wedding in the first place.  She thought if would make him miserable — good thinking.  Sorry folks, I know that I’m likely to get the wet noodle for this, but Edward should have respected her wishes and not have sent an invitation to Jacob.  Sometimes Edward wanting to give Bella everything she wants is a bad idea.  True, Bella would like Jake to be at the wedding, but she wants him to be there wishing her well, not freaking out.  Bella was right when she figured that Jake couldn’t take it.  Jake was right when he took off to get away from the pain of losing her.  But his attempt to make a beautiful “Gesture” was a total failure.

    Exactly!

    POOR Jacob???

  • Sarmozo

Come on, Jacob never did love Bella so deeply as someone here is thinking. Now and then he hurted her, left her near to angry vampires, laughed about her. His perspective is simply: how Bella could choose vampire instead of HIM?!
