Welcome to the BreakingDawnMovie.org’s Community Re-read!

While we impatiently wait for Breaking Dawn part 2 to be released, we continue with our highly-popular Community Re-Read!

Every Tuesday & Friday, I’ll post a breakdown for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on November 16th. Let’s get started, dig out your copy of Breaking Dawn, read the chapters together with us, and discuss anything you may find of interest that you might have missed the first or twentieth time around. Let’s continue our journey into FOREVER. 7 CHAPTERS TO GO!

Chapter 32: Company

“Kate probably didn’t understand, never having known for herself the passion of a mother for her child. She must have not realized just how far past too far she’d already gone. I was so furious that my vision took on a strange reddish tint, and my tongue tasted like burning metal. The strength I usually worked to keep restrained flowed through my muscles, and I knew I could crush her into diamond-hard rubble if she pushed me to it.”

Well the more the merrier…I guess. The Cullen Manor seems more like a studio-sized apartment now that more and more vampires are arriving. Peter and Charlotte have arrived per Alice, but they had no idea what they were about to see. And just as they trusted Alice to travel so far, they also trust Renesmee and are willing to help out.

Pg. 608-609 We get introduced to Carlisle’s pals from Egypt and Ireland. Siobhan, Liam and Maggie of the Irish coven arrived first. Maggie having the ability to instantly know if she’s being lied to; accept Renesmee’s story and the others agreed. Amun and the other Egyptian vampires were another story. Even after two younger members of his coven, Benjamin and Tia, had been convinced by Renesmee’s explanation, Amun refused to touch her and ordered his coven to leave. Benjamin-an oddly cheerful vampire who looked barely older than a boy and seemed both utterly confident and utterly careless and the same time-persuaded Amun to stay with a few subtle threats about disbanding their alliance. Amun stayed, but continued to refuse to touch Renesmee, and would not allow his mate, Kebi, to touch her, either.

Pg. 610 Edward explains to Bella the reason Amun decided to listen to Benjamin. “His gift is so singular that Amun is terrified of losing him. Much like we planned to keep Renesmee from Aro’s knowledge. Amun has been keeping Benjamin from Aro’s attention. Amun created Benjamin, knowing he would be special.” “What can he do?” “Something Eleazar’s never seen before. Something I’ve never heard of. He can actually influence the elements-earth, wind, water and air. True manipulation, no illusion of the mind.”

Pg. 611-613 *Emmett and Rosalie sent all the nomads they could find and they all too, agreed that Renesmee was safe. Carlisle and Esme returned a week after they had gone, Emmett and Rosalie just a few days later, and all of us felt better when they were home. Carlisle brought one more friend home with him, though friend might have been the wrong term. Alistair was a misanthropic English vampire who counted Carlisle as his closet acquaintance, though he could hardly stand a visit more than once a century. Alistair very much preferred wanted to be alone, and Carlisle had called in a lot of favors to get him here. He shunned all company, and it was clear he didn’t have any admirers in the gathered covens. Edward told Carlisle, Esme, and me that Alistair was afraid to be here, but more afraid of not knowing the outcome. He was deeply suspicious of all authority, and therefore naturally suspicious of the Volturi. “Of course, now they’ll know I was here,” we heard him grumble to himself in the attic-his preferred spot to sulk. “No way to keep it from Aro at this point. Centuries on the run, that’s what this will mean. Everyone Carlisle’s talked to in the last decade will be on their list. I can’t believe I got myself sucked into this mess. What a fine way to treat your friends.” Sidebar- What in the heck did he come there for? Goodness and I would hardly call someone who comes to visit me and sulks in my attic every 100 years a friend! And if Alistair considers Carlisle his bff, why does Carlisle have to call in so many favors to get him to Forks? Strange. Anyway moving along. As if the Cullen household wasn’t already packed…two more unexpected guests show up, and Carlisle is absolutely stunned. “Carlisle,” the taller of the very tall ferine women greeted him when they arrived. But Alice had sent them, and that was interesting news, to put it mildly. Why was Alice in South America? “Zafrina and Senna! But where’s Kachiri?” Carlisle asked. “I’ve never seen you three apart.” “Alice told us we needed to separate.” Zafrina answered in the rough, deep voice that matched her wild appearance.“It’s uncomfortable to be away from each other, but Alice assured us that you needed us here, while she very much needed Kachiri somewhere else. That’s all she would tell us, except that there was a great hurry…?” The news about Alice was oddly comforting. Clearly, she was on some obscure mission of her own as she avoided whatever Aro had planned for her.

Pg. 618-621 After Edward refused to continue being Bella’s fighting instructor, Kate steps in and things get very interesting. It killed me that it was Edward who had to suffer, my arms wrapped uselessly around him while he winced over and over from Kate’s ‘low’ setting. I tried as hard as I could to push my shield around us both; every now and then I would get it, and then it would slip away again. ”Hey,” Edward said cheerfully, trying to hide any evidence of distress in his voice. “That one barely stung. Good job, Bella.” I tested the elastic band, struggling to force it to remain solid as I stretched it away from me. “Again, Kate.” Kate pressed her palm into Edward’s shoulder. He sighed in relief. “Nothing that time.” She raised and eyebrow. “That wasn’t low, either.” “Good,” I huffed. “You’re doing and amazing job, Bella.” Edward said. “Kate, tell her how well she’s doing.” Kate pursed her lips. “I don’t know. She’s obviously got tremendous ability, and we’re only beginning to touch it. She can do better, I’m sure. She’s just lacking incentive.” ”Nessie,” Kate said. “Would you like to come help your mother?” “No,” I half-snarled.“Absolutely not, Kate.” Renesmee reached for me, and I opened my arms automatically. She curled into me, pressing her head into the hollow beneath my shoulder. “But momma I want to help.” “No,” I said, quickly backing away. Kate had taken a deliberate step in my direction, her hand stretched toward us. “Stay away from us, Kate.” I warned her. “No.” She began stalking forward. The rage brought every aspect of my being into sharper focus. I could even feel the elasticity of my shield more exactly now-feel that it was not a band so much as a layer, a thin film that covered me from head to toe. With the anger ripping through my body, I had a better sense of it, a tighter hold on it. I stretched it around myself, out from myself, swaddling Renesmee completely inside it, just in case Kate got past my guard. “Be careful, Kate.” Edward cautioned. “Can you hear anything from Nessie?” Edward darted into the space between us, blocking my line to Kate. “No, nothing at all,” he answered. “Now give Bella some space to calm down, Kate.” “We don’t have time to do this gently, Edward. We’re going to have to push her.” “Back off for a minute, Kate.” Renesmee’s hand was on my neck; she was remembering Kate’s attack, showing me that no harm was meant, that Daddy was in on it…

Pg. 622-628 This chapter ends with the entire house in complete shock by the arrival of two of the most mysterious vampires…ever. But first Bella finally reaches her shielding potential. As Bella successfully shields herself, Renesmee, and Edward, and Zafrina has an amazing idea. “Can you see this?” “I don’t see anything I shouldn’t” Edward said. “And you, Renesmee?” Zafrina asked. Renesmee smiled at Zafrina and shook her head. “No one panic,” Zafrina warned the little group watching. “I want to see how far she can extend.” There was a shocked gasp from everyone there-Eleazar, Carmen, Tanya, Garrett, Benjamin, Tia, Siobhan, Maggie-everyone but Senna, who seemed prepared for whatever Zafrina was doing. “Raise your hand when you get your sight back,” Zafrina instructed. “Now, Bella. See how many you can shield.” I only watched Kate’s anxious expression while I worked, and I groaned quietly with relief when her eyes blinded and focused. She raised her hand. “Fascinating!” Edward muttered under his breath. “It’s like a one-way glass. I can read everything they’re thinking, but they can’t reach me behind it. And I can hear Renesmee, though I couldn’t when I was on the outside. I’ll bet Kate could shock me now, because she’s underneath the umbrella. I still can’t hear you…hmmm. How does that work? I wonder if…” Zafrina and Kate along with the others continue to work with Bella. Meanwhile things turn completely freaky inside. And once again another arrival has Carlisle Cullen absolutely floored.  And then there was a low commotion from the front yard. I heard Carlisle speaking over a babble of surprised voices.“Did Alice send you?” he asked someone, his voice unsure, slightly upset. Edward darted into the house and most of the others imitated him. I flowed more slowly, Renesmee still perched on my back. “No one sent us,” a deep whispery voice answered Carlisle’s question. I was immediately reminded of the ancient voiced of Aro and Caius, and I froze just inside the kitchen. Carlisle’s voice was wary as he responded. “Then what brings you here now?” “Word travels,” a different voice answered, just as feathery as the first. “We heard hints that the Volturi were moving against you. There were whispers that you would not stand alone. Obviously, the whispers were true. This is an impressive gathering.” “We are not challenging the Volturi,” Carlisle answered in a strained tone. “There has been a misunderstanding that is all. What you see are witnesses. We just need the Volturi to listen. We didn’t-“ “We don’t care what they say you did. And we don’t care if you broke the law.” “No matter how egregiously.” “We’ve been waiting a millennium and a half for the Italian scum to be challenged. If there is any chance they will fall, we will be here to see it.” “Or even help defeat them. If we think you have a chance of success.” “Bella?” Edward called to me in a hard voice. “Bring Renesmee here, please. Maybe we should test our Romanian visitors’ claims.” The vampires at the door were both slight and short, one dark-haired and the other with hair so ashy blond that it looked pale gray. They had the same powdery look to their skin as the Volturi, though I thought it was not so pronounced. The dark one grinned when I came into view. “Well, well Carlisle. You have been naughty haven’t you?” She’s not what you think, Stefan.” “And we don’t care either way,” the blond responded. “As we said before.” “Then you’re welcome to observe, Vladimir, but it is definitely not our plan to challenge the Volturi, as we said before.” “Then we’ll just cross our fingers,” Stefan began. “And hope we get lucky,” finished Vladimir. In the end we pulled together seventeen witnesses. Aside from the Volturi, it was probably the largest friendly gathering of mature vampires in immortal history. Renesmee had won over so many in such a brief time. The last two surviving Romanians-focused only on their bitter resentment of the ones who had overthrown their empire fifteen hundred years earlier-took everything in stride. They would not touch Renesmee, but they showed aversion to her. They seemed mysteriously delighted by our alliance with the werewolves. We did not hope for the same things, but we all hoped.

*Goodness who are those two nut balls? These vampires get stranger and stranger by the minute, they are going to give poor Carlisle a heart attack (is that possible?) I just wish everything was back to normal. This is all too much for my nerves lol. And Bella, young Miss Bella is a shield! Her powers are growing stronger everyday. I cannot wait until the Volturi arrive that’s for sure. Let’s discuss.

I should not be surprised that a threat to a child is what it takes for Bella to fully realize the strength of her shield. Mama Cougar and that threat is the whole point of this part of the book and how to protect Renesmee. The other part that always surprises me is how the gift Renesmee carries is so strong that it seems to melt every vampire in their steps.

    Chapter 32 Company
This is where I do sympathize with the wolf pack.  All these strange vampires hanging out, getting hungry, wondering where their next meal may come from.  Eieek it gives me the creeps.  Now let’s see….who all has arrived to witness: Kate, Tanya, Carmen, Eleazar from The Denali Coven and Eleazar has a talent for seeing others talents and Kate can shock people.  Then we have Peter and Charlotte arrive.  The Irish Coven arrive next with Liam, Siobhan, and Maggie who has the talent for knowing when someone is deceptive in actions or with words so it is nice to have her believe Edward immediately.  The Egyptian Coven arrive with Amun the leader, Kebi his mate, and Benjamin and Tia.  Benjamin has a talent that no one has seen before.  He can manipulate earth, wind, fire, water.  Amun is very nervous that the Volturi will find out about Benjamin and steal him for their own.  It is very disturbing to think about the possessiveness and greed these vamps have.  But thank goodness that Edward can read mind.  He can tell if any of these new visitors have something evil on their minds.  But my favorite new vampire was sent by Emmett and Rosalie….Garrett the nomad.  I love his character…a vampire transformed during the American Revolutionary War.  He is curious, loves a mystery, and a challenge.   No wonder he was attracted to Kate.  She would be a challenge LOL.  Mary and Randall come without much info on them other than they knew Carlisle.  Then the Cullen’s begin arriving home.  Carlisle brings a strange vampire named Alistair who liked to be alone and was able to do so easily because he is a tracker.  So he ends up heading in the opposite direction from other vampires.  Alistair’s back story in The Official Guide is very interesting.  It explains why he is so paranoid and believes that everyone is involved in a conspiracy.  I recommend it.  Then a surprise arrival from the Amazon Coven, but one is missing.  Zafrina and Senna come without Kachiri.  They explain that Alice sent them here and Kachiri elsewhere without explanation.  At least we know that Alice has a plan.  It is comforting to know how much everyone trusts Alice too.  The talent that Zafrina has becomes a great distraction for Renesmee.  Her pretty pictures would be a great game for my grandkids..LOL.  Let’s see that means 23 vampires living in the Cullen house including the Cullen’s and not counting Renesmee since she is a hybrid.  Wow, how can Jacob stand it?  But then the training begins.  Bella is trying to learn to fight and use her shield to help others. I do hope they show this in detail.  I want to see Kate trying to trick Bella and Bella getting angrier and angrier and Edward giving Kate a warning with a shit eating grin.  And I want to see Garrett succumb to Kate’s shock.  That will be epic.  Enter the Romanian Coven.  Vladimir and Stefan arrive only for the chance to see the  Volturi get dethroned.  That makes 25 vamps ready to witness or fight the Volturi….at least we have hope.

OMG! Just 7 chapters to go – excitement and dread! 23 days to go, it’s the 23rd too – my birthday :)

This chapter really took some studying – all the new vampires, names and backstories – loved it. Can’t wait to see some of the talents in action. I’m trying to imagine what the Cullen house must look like with all this hustle and bustle; it used to be so calm – well a lot of the time!

Yes, those poor wolves, imagine protecting their boundary line now! I wondered, with all those ‘red eyes’ as Jacob says, how the body count would be kept discreet, even if they did hunt further afield!

A lot of live and let live must have had to go on to cope with each other’s preferences and ways of ‘living’. The common cause that helped this was Renesmee, either her ability to charm everyone or the principle she represented and that they would fight for.

  • twigrandma

That’s an awful lot of new vampires to keep straight!

Protecting Renesmee from Kate was great motivation for Bella to develop her shield. Bella, you go girl!

  • lovinggrandmother

J4 wonderful, analogy….. You have covered the whole thing all in a nut shell, not much to add….. I do love that we get to met all the vampires here and learn all their different “talent’s”. Who would have thought that there were so many talented Vampires…… I do love Garrett too and how he becomes intrigued by Kate….. and each and every vampire (almost) adores Nessie…… I love the way that Zafrina takes her under her wing and seems to really adore her and showing her all the “pretty pictures”. Oh! and then we have the last 2 to show up, that was interesting…. weren’t even interested in Nessie. just want payback….I wonder how they will twist all this when we see part 2….

  • jite4vanquish

    Wow, that is awesome! Congratulations!

  • jite4vanquish

I really love having the official guide to help me learn more about all the characters.

  • jite4vanquish

So so true….Renesmee is the glue that binds.

  • jite4vanquish

I am really looking forward to seeing all the new vamps on screen. And isn’t there a French one that is supposed to be written into the script for some reason?

  • lovinggrandmother

    Yes, I believe so…..

I tried for two hours to comment. Maybe Disqus was trying to tell me something.
This chapter gets a little bazzar with all the names and talents of all the vampire friends of the Cullen’s. But it only makes me admire Stephenie Meyer more and more for her wonderful imagination. When you read it for the first time, you wonder, where is this going??? But trusting that Stephenie will bring it back full circle. And she certainly does.
