Welcome to the BreakingDawnMovie.org’s Community Re-read!

While we impatiently wait for Breaking Dawn part 2 to be released, we continue with our highly-popular Community Re-Read!

Every Tuesday & Friday, I’ll post a breakdown for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on November 16th. Let’s get started, dig out your copy of Breaking Dawn, read the chapters together with us, and discuss anything you may find of interest that you might have missed the first or twentieth time around. Let’s continue our journey into FOREVER.

Chapter 25: Favor

“Charlie couldn’t know about me! About vampires! That would put him on a hit list that even the Cullens couldn’t save him from.”

I’d nearly forgotten this is the chapter that we meet Charlie! Poor Chief Swan has been in the dark ever since this whole mess has gone down. And now even more secrets, lies and half truths are revealed, let’s go!

Pg. 486-491  *Edward and Bella have just spent their first night in their new home. The next morning Edward reminds Bella that they have a newborn daughter that would need tending to lol. After the fiasco of Bella picking out something to wear, the pair head on up to the main house. They arrive and Renesmee has dismembered one of Esme’s fine silver spoons! Nessie spots Bells and demands her mother. The vibe is quite weird as Rosalie is even more annoyed with Jacob than usual. Bella while enjoying her baby also wonders exactly what is going on and where are Jacob and his entire pack. The Cullen’s begin discussing their big move. Rosalie actually begins the discussion. Emmett chimes in and announces that they should head to New Hampshire and set up shop there since Bella is already enrolled in school.

Pg. 492-494 *Jacob returns and all hell breaks loose at the Cullen compound.   Before any of us could respond, Alice was on her feet. “What is he doing? I can’t see anything!” And then Edward’s hands balled up into fists and he snarled, “He talked to Charlie. He thinks Charlie is following after him. Coming here. Today.”  “He told Charlie?”  I gasped. “How could he do that? No!”  Edward spoke through his teeth. “Jacob’s on his way in now.” “Hey guys,” he greeted us, grinning. It was perfectly silent. Leah and Seth slipped in behind him, in their human forms-for now. “Charlie’ll be here soon,” Jacob said to me casually. “Just a heads-up. I assume Alice is getting you sunglasses or something?” “You assume way too much. What. Have. You. Done.” “Blondie and Emmett woke me up this morning going on and on about you all moving cross-country. Like I could let you leave. Charlie was the biggest issue there, right? Well, problem solved.” “Do you even realize what you’ve done? The danger you’ve put him in?” He snorted “I didn’t put him in any danger. Except from you. But you’ve got some kind of supernatural self-control, right?” Edward moved then, darting across the room to get in Jacob’s face. “That’s just a theory, mongrel. You think we should test it out on Charlie? Did you consider the physical pain you’re putting Bella through, even if she can resist? Or the emotional pain if she doesn’t? I suppose what happens to Bella no longer concerns you!” He spit the last word. His mouth dropped into a frown. “Bella will be in pain?” “Like you’ve shoved a white-hot branding iron down her throat!” “I didn’t know that,” Jacob whispered.  “Then perhaps you should have asked first.” “This isn’t about me,” I interrupted. “This is about Charlie, Jacob. Do you realize its death or vampire life for him now, too?” “Relax, Bella. I didn’t tell him anything you weren’t planning to tell him.”  *Sidebar- I can’t go any further. Do you all see my issue with Jacob? He is too extra. He needs to mind his business because this is not cool. Again it’s my opinion, but he is just always…around, it irks me. Anyway let’s continue.

Pg. 495-498  “He phased in front of Charlie,” Edward hissed. I whispered. “You what?” “He’s brave. Brave as you are. Didn’t pass out or throw up or anything. I was impressed. You should’ve seen his face when I started taking my clothes off, though. Priceless.” Jacob chortled. “You absolute moron! You could’ve given him a heart attack!” “Charlie’s fine. He’s tough. If you’d give him this just a minute, you’ll see that I did you a favor here.” Jacob flopped into the nearest chair. “So I knocked on Charlie’s door this morning and asked him to come for a walk with me. I told him you weren’t sick anymore, and that things were a little weird, but good. He was about to take off to see you, but I told him I had to show him something first. And then I phased. Lemme see…I phased back and got dressed, and then after he started breathing again, I said something like Charlie you don’t live in the world you thought you lived in. The good news is, nothing has changed-except now you know. Life’ll go on the same way it has. You can go back to pretending that you don’t believe any of this. He wanted to know what was really going on with you, with the whole rare-disease thing. I told him that you had been sick, but you were fine now-it was just that you’d had to change a little bit in the process of getting better. He wanted to know what I meant by change and I told him that you looked a lot more like Esme now than you looked like Renee.” *Sidebar-LMAO!!! Ok, ok I said the kid annoyed me, I never said that he wasn’t funny!    Edward hissed while I stared in horror. “I started to tell him more of werewolves, but I didn’t even get the whole word out-Charlie cut me off and said he’d rather not know the specifics. Then asked if you’d known what you were getting yourself into when you married Edward, and said, ‘Sure, she’s known all about this for years, since she first came to Forks’. After he got calmed down, he just wanted two things. He wanted to see you, and I said it would be better if he gave me a head start to explain.” Jacob smiled. “You’ll like this. His main request is that he be told as little as possible about all of this. Need to know only.”  I felt relief for the first time since Jacob had walked in. “I can handle that part. What did you tell him about Renesmee?” “Oh yeah. So I told him that you and Edward had inherited a new little mouth to feed. She’s your orphaned ward. Charlie was way past being shocked at this point, but he did ask if you were adopting her. ‘Like a daughter? Like I’m sort of a grandfather?’ were his exact words. I told him yes. ‘Congrats Gramps,’ and all of that. He even smiled a little.”   *Jake continues to let the Cullens in on all the events that happened at the Swan residence. He even explained how special Renesmee was, and that if Charlie could accept the new Bella, mystery special orphan and all…that they would all stick around. Which was not his promise to keep.

Pg. 500-511 The moment has come! This chapter ends with the Forks, Washington Chief of Police Charlie Swan entering the vampire den. But not before Bella gets a crash course on how to look and act human. Did I mention this is a mess?   Alice held out her hand. There was a small white box on her palm. “These will irritate your eyes-they won’t hurt, but they will cloud your vision. It’s annoying. They also won’t match your old color, but it’s still better than bright red, right?” She flipped the contact box in the air and I caught it. I nodded and opened the container. I took the little brown quarter-shaped sphere and pressed it, concave side in, to my eye. “How do I look?” Edward smiled. “Gorgeous. Of course-“ “Esme give her a few pointers on acting human while I stock the powder room with contacts.” “How long do I have?” “Charlie will be here in five minutes. Keep it simple.” Esme nodded once and came to take my hand. “The main thing is not to sit too still or move too fast,” she told me. “Sit down if he does,” Emmett interjected. “Humans don’t like to just stand there. “Let your eyes wander every thirty seconds or so,” Jasper added. “Cross your legs for about five minutes, then switch to crossing your ankles for the next five,” Rosalie added. “And blink at least three times a minute.” Emmett said. “Move your hands, too. Brush your hair or pretend to scratch something,” Jasper said. “Sit, look around, blink, fidget.” “Right.” Esme approved. Edward took a seat beside me and put his arms around Renesmee and me. The car pulled in front of the house and idled for a few seconds. Then the engine cut off, and a door slammed. Knock, knock, knock. Carlisle answered the door. “Hello, Charlie.” “Carlisle,” Charlie greeted him stiffly. “Where, Bella?” “Right here, Dad.”  Ugh! My voice was so wrong. Charlie’s blank expression told me how off my voice was. His eyes zeroed in on me and widened. I read the emotions as they scrolled across his face. Shock. Disbelief. Pain. Loss. Fear. Anger. Suspicion. More pain. “Is that you, Bella?” he whispered. “Yep. Hi, Dad.” He darted an accusing glare at Edward, and then his eyes flickered back to me. “Bella?” he asked again. “It’s really me.” “Are you okay?” he demanded. “Really and truly great. Healthy as a horse.” “Jake told me this was…necessary. That you were dying.” “Jacob was telling you the truth.”  Charlie saw my anxious glance down and followed it. “Oh. This is her. The orphan Jacob said you’re adopting.” “My niece,” Edward lied smoothly. Renesmee peeked out from under my hair, sniffing again. She glanced shyly at Charlie from under her long lashes, then hid again. “She’s…she’s well, she’s a beauty.” “Yes,” Edward agreed. “Kind of a big responsibility though. You two are just getting started.” “What else could we do?” Edward brushed his fingers lightly over her cheek. “Would you have refused her?” “Hmph. Well. Jake says you call her Nessie?” “No, we don’t. Her name is Renesmee.” Charlie refocused on me. “How do you feel about this? Maybe Carlisle and Esme could-“ “She’s mine. I want her.” Charlie frowned. “You gonna make me a grandpa so young?” Edward smiled. “Carlisle is a grandfather, too.” Charlie snorted and then laughed. “I guess that does sort of make me feel better. She sure is something to look at.” Renesmee leaned toward the smell, shaking off my hair and looking him full in the face for the first time. Charlie gasped. I knew what he was seeing. My eyes- his eyes-copied exactly into her perfect face. “Need to know, Charlie. It’s okay. I promise.” Charlie swallowed and nodded. And then his eyes blazed as he took a step close to Edward with his fists tightly clenched. “I don’t want to know everything, but I’m done with the lies!”  “I’m sorry,” Edward said calmly. “It’s to protect Bella and Renesmee as well as the rest of us. Can you go along with the lies for them?” Charlie huffed once and then turned his glare on me. “You might’ve given me some warning, kid.” “Would it really have made this any easier?” “Whoa,” Charlie gasped his eyes on her perfect teeth. “How old is she?” “Um…” “Three months.” Edward said. “She’s younger in some ways, more mature in others.”  Very deliberately, Renesmee waved at him. Jacob elbowed him. “Told you she was special. didn’t I? Everything’s going to be great, Charlie. Just try not to believe everything you see.” “Woo”  Emmett suddenly boomed in his deep bass. Go Gators!” Charlie recovered, then looked at Emmett over his shoulder, “Florida winning?” “Just scored the first touchdown. Bout time somebody scored around here.” I fought back a hiss. In front of Charlie? That was over the line. But Charlie was beyond noticing innuendos. He lurched to his feet, stepped around Jacob, and half-fell into an open chair. ”Well,” he sighed, “I guess we should see if they can hold on to the lead.”

*Sooo, Charlie is just going to hang out? Lol. Let me just say. I will have a striking fit if they don’t put this entire scene with Charlie in this movie. I laughed through the entire end part of this chapter. Charlie’s facial expressions and the Cullen’s guilty looks are hilarious! So they have to put this in the movie. So I know some of you think I’m always hard on Jacob, and you’re right and I won’t let up…sorry but you love my honesty…right? I get what Jake was doing and it was commendable even, if it weren’t for his own selfish gain, I feel. I could be wrong but that’s what the comments section is for…let’s talk!

Good Morning Ladies, Laugh my A– off at this chapter, I have to say I really want to see this in the movie too!!!! I think that Jake was just being a kid in some ways and not thinking how it could affect Bella seeing and smelling Charlie.
He thought that Bella was so much herself that he forgot that she was a Vampire. lol!!! Yea! Jake didn’t want them to leave but he didn’t think….. as I said his immaturity showed here. At least he explained to Charlie that it wasn’t a world he thought it was, and then showing himself phase must have been something really funny, Jake taking of his shorts I wonder what must have been running threw Charlies head when Jake was undressing….I keep trying to picture it in my head every time I read it….. that should be pretty funny in the movie!
And then Charlie arrives at the Cullens and hears and then see’s Bella, I am sure that the changes are completely reconizable to him, and then he see’s Renesseme and see’s the resemblances. He knows that something is different but doesn’t want to really know, but he has to know if Bella knew about it and is so upset by the LIES. But Jake reminds him that it is a Need to Know Only! Then Emmett takes Charlies concentration away to the football game, and continues with his fun remakes to Bella and Edward. I love the low growl we hear from Edward. Another of my favorite chapter’s. I loved the way SM takes you along with Jake in this chapter, the way she writes just seems to pull you along in the room with the Cullens. There are so many things that I love about this book in particular it makes the imagination work, something alot of people don’t know how to use anymore…. does anyone agree?

  • Red

What did Emmett mean with his comment “Bout time somebody scored around here”?

  • anonymous

it’s an innuendo for bella and edward’s love life

  • Lux

This is one of my favorite chapters in this book! Simply because I had never thought of the possibility that Charlie could be in Bella’s new life, I think I felt relief and I was so happy for her self-control and Charlie’s mentality to sustain all that mythological world.
But rescued three things: first, how Edward claimed Jacob’s actions and the fact he didn’t thought of Bella’s pain. Those words were so heartfelt and, personally, at this point I also wanted to go against the immature and unconscious of Jacob. But fortunately things turned out well.
Second, I loved Charlie with his “Nedd to know”, it was so exact, shows how insightful, intelligent and cautious he is. I hope so eager to see this scene in the movie!! Especially the “Grandpa Charlie”! I simply love Charlie!
And finally, the unwelcome but necessary commentary of Emmett, which will bring him more of a bitter taste. But this represented the support of all the Cullens, wich was so closely in this particular chapter.

    Kisses from Argentina.

  • DJ

Totally agree loving grandmother. I hope this is in the film just as it plays out in the book, as I imagine the scenes visually and emotionally; my annoyance at Jacob (alongside the Cullen’s!), in contrast with my elation that it leads to Charlie being reunited with Bella and ends well. Yep, Charlie, Chief of Police, going along with the ‘need to know’ basis set of rules, whilst my imagination goes along with having seen the resemblance, hope he knows – I’d like to think so.
Charlie distracted and settling down to the game with Emmett, would love to see that, to me it’s saying acceptance of what is and being part of the family.

  • jite4vanquish

So so true, Lovinggrandmother, I agree about this book pulling your imagination into a world of fantasy. It is very difficult for the movies to equal my imagination but it sure has been enjoyable to watch because of our love of the story and the characters.

  • jite4vanquish

Well said, Lux. I agree about my hopes for this scene in the movie. The more Charlie, the better.

  • jite4vanquish

I have worked too much this week and have not had time to write a commentary to this chapter. I will try and post late Saturday or maybe Sunday. TTYL

Yea that Jacob just irks me to my core! But he is the comic relief in the saga. I LOVED in breaking dawn pt1 movie when bella referred to the baby as ‘he’ and Jake said ‘OH its a boy? Guess I shouldve brought some blue balloon?” LOL

  • twigrandma

Jacob was just being Jacob in this chapter. The Cullens should have been suspicious the moment Jacob left Renesmee that morning. He wouldn’t have left her for any old reason. They should have known he was up to something. So Jacob has phased in front of Charlie and Charlie must know that there is some magical parallel universe going on, that Renesmee, at the age of 3 months, is too advanced and could not have realistically been conceived by Bella and Edward (the timetable is off), but she looks exactly like them. He is told they have to lie about her in order to protect all of the Cullens. Charlie is a cop, and yet doesn’t want to investigate anything, or even know anything. Lol! Oh, the IRONY! Only Billy Burke would be able to pull that off in the movie! It should be good!

But maybe Charlie knows his limits, and too much info of this sort would make anybody’s mind snap, so he turns to the comforting sound of everyday, ordinary life – a football game on TV – to save his sanity.

I hope none of this is left out of the movie.

I was wondering, if Renesmee is drinking blood, shouldn’t she be attracted to Charlie in a thirsty way?

  • lovinggrandmother

If you remember she was told by Daddy that she couldn’t bite Charlie, but yes she could bite Jake…. and I think that when she was hiding from Charlie she was also trying to resist the smell like Bella was…. does that make sense?

  • lovinggrandmother

Well, you need to take a vacation and join us in LA in Nov. !!!!

  • lovinggrandmother

Nice to see you here commenting too!!! …..:))

  • lovinggrandmother

Yes, I agree with that also. DJ

  • EdwardsNana

Oh Mrs.C, I’m right there with you on Jacob. He is so immature. But he is also a very important piece of the puzzle. There are times I could put him in time out and spank his ever-lovin bottom, but we would miss old Jacob, if he weren’t in the story.
The Cullen’s are priceless, how they love Bella and hover over her.
As for Charlie, he is one of my favorite characters. But I don’t know how he can not feel guilty about picking up a paycheck each week, for being the all knowing Cheif of Police. He has no idea what goes on in the town of Forks. Thank goodness.
I marvel over Edward, every time I read about him in any chapter, I love him even more. He is awesome…………..just awesome. How would you like to have someone like Edward by your side, loving you for eternity………….”happy place”

  • Lux

Yes, it makes sense. But I also think it was a posture that Bella was holding Renesmee so Charlie couldn’t see the brown eyes, her own eyes, and his too … And by the way, I love that part where Edward tells Renesmee than she can’t bite Charlie or show him her thoughts as she does with the rest. I do not know if I liked more to read the degree of understanding reached by the little girl, or that beautiful and perfect interaction between father and daughter.

  • Lux

Thank you. Beyond that many of the chapters bring some emotion, this contains a very special one. Charlie is a beloved character, who with his nature and the way so characteristic as he love his daughter, won a place in everyone.

  • Lux

Yes, and especially when that beloved character is played by a talented actor such as Billy Burke! Certainly we will enjoy his scenes as we have enjoyed all the previous ones.

  • mirandathevampgirl

Ha u would like to give jake a piece of his own medicine. As for me I would like to put him outside like a real dog

  • mirandathevampgirl

    Hello guys.
I know this has nothing to do with the chapeter but I just want to share that I have been working on a really great story for the past three months about having the characters from harry potter twilight and the hunger games go on a vacation together. And guess what I am almost done.
This is going to b my first fanfiction that’s goinng to feel likke a novel. I’ve written other fanfiction before but this is a big one to me. It almost feels like it can be a miniseries. I just am working on athe rough drafts in notebooks and then when I’m done its all going to be typed it may need some editing but what epic novel doesn’t. It hasn’t been easy balancing my fanfiction workshopping and school but I’m doing it the best I can one step at a time. It will take a while but it will come together for all of u to read

  • EdwardsNana

Hi Miranda!! You go girl!!! Put that dog outside!!! ; )

If this scene isnt in the movie gonna be really disapointed. There’s quite a few details earlier on in part two if bd thr must be includes then the lead up to the battle can begin. I pray they get this movie right, its such an important aspect of this series that charlie comes to accept and be apart of bellas new life; even if he doesnt really understand it lol xx

  • jite4vanquish

I finally read the chapter and am ready share my notes:
    Chapter 25 Favor
I can definitely understand why it was so difficult for Bella to decide what she wants next…Edward? Renesmee? And then to enter Alice’s closet with such angst.  All Bella wants to do is get dressed and go see Renesmee, but she is inundated with THE ALICE CLOSET!  Hahaha, I loved it.  But once dressed, they are off to the main house to see how much Renesmee has changed over night.  BTW, I found it very humorous  that Rosalie referred to Renesmee as “the little monster” when explaining they had to entertain her while waiting for Bella to get there.  I wonder if that will remain in the script.  And then Emmett has to start with his teasing remarks.  Okay, now this is a thought.  I know how we all jump on Jacob and how selfish and immature he is, but did you notice how Stephenie Meyer title this chapter?? Favor!  She must have seen what Jacob has done here as a favor to Bella to save the family, the Cullen family, and the Swan family from a long indefinite separation.  Otherwise, why call it Favor?  Why not call it Stupid Wolf Tricks!  Hahahaha.  Oh well, just a thought. When the movie comes out, I want to see Charlie’s face as he watches Jacob phase.  That would be a total blast.  I have a feeling that it will be more like the book where Jake just tells them what he did.  I love Charlie’s character, and the more he is in this movie, the better.  Maybe he can even show up at the final battle with guns blazing!!!  Hahahaha.  The one good thing about Jacob, was that he was remorseful when he found out how painful it will be for Bella to be around her human father.  I did want to mention one other thing.  When Alice gives Bella her contacts, she explains that when they left on their honeymoon, Alice saw more than one future.  And Bella returning as a vampire must have been one possibility.  So back when we discussed the phone call that Alice made to Edward during the honeymoon and she said she saw something…..those previous futures she saw must have changed dramatically for her when Bella was pregnant, and/or, all futures previously seen by Alice disappeared altogether…..which I believe, since Renesmee was impenetrable of Alice’s vision.  Back to the chapter……I hope we see Renesmee biting Jacob some time or another.  I think that would be hilarious.  Now Charlie arrives.  I can relate to Charlie’s anger about being lied to.  I don’t like it and I usually figure out when someone is lying to me and confront them.  I am glad he confronted them.  Even though he agreed to “need to know” there is a difference to that and outright lies.  They agree to tell him what the “story” needs to be instead of just plain lying.  I liked the compromise.  At the end of this chapter I began to believe that everything would be just fine…..clever of SM to mislead us.

  • jite4vanquish

I wonder if vampires can smell sex….like the song…I smell sex and candy

  • Twilight_a_drug_2_me

I love the E/B parts and i really want to hear E growl. Oh my! but honestly need to get the wet noodle out and slap Jacob with it! He really had no regard for anything of concern other than thinking of himself and how he can keep the Cullens from leaving when they heard about that.
I really am not liking him all that well in a few chapters but it gets better-sort of…lol
I wonder if Charlie would have made any form of consideration of being a Vampire after he knew what was going on? Just a thought BTS.
As a parent, yes I would want to do it my kids even if I knew the potential consequences.
365 days of new clothes to wear once…hmmm? I might like certain outfits and would have a hard time wearing it just once!
It’ll be interesting seeing this chapter in the movie. Can’t wait!

  • twigrandma

Ha, if vampires can smell the difference between denim and silk, then they can surely smell sex, lol.

  • twigrandma

Enjoyed your post, Joni! I was also glad that Charlie confronted Edward about lying to him and glad that Edward remained cool and logical about it. I really wish Charlie would like Edward more. He has no idea what a wonderful guy he is for Bella. But then, if I were the parent, I would probably see it differently.

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

    I’m sure they can.

  • jite4vanquish

    Hahahaha…thanks for the confirmation Twigrandma

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

I don’t think we’ve heard Edward growl since Twilight, I’d like to hear him to.

  • run_with vamps

Hey guys, thas nothing to do with this chapter, but i was just wandering since i’m reading twilight for probably the hundreth time and it’s only come across me now.Why does Edward say take your hair down bella when he already knows that alice can already smell her across the field.(was it beacuse he was stressed or something.)

  • jite4vanquish

If Edward was tearing your clothes off of you every night, you would only wear them once…hahahaha

  • TeamEC1918

    Let me try posting again!

  • TeamEdward_Bella4ever

Losing a fav outfit wouldn’t be a sacrifice as long as it’s Edward ripping them off.

  • EdwardsNana

Jule, there are so many things I hope are in the movie. I have faith in Bill Condon, that he will make sure it ends with all of us happy……

  • ifonly2011

Am I the only one who thought this was all too convenient when first reading? Even though I was pleased that Charlie was back in the book (gotta love Charlie!) I just felt myself picking flaws with SM’s storyline :( Don’t get me wrong the dialogue is great but like I say all to convenient. It does give us the chance though to really feel how strongly Jacob is connected to Renesmee, afterall he does all this to protect his relationship with her.
I am however really looking forward to seeing this in the film, always happy to have Billy Burke take centre stage! :) )

  • jite4vanquish

In a way, you are right, but I think that was SM’s way of giving us a false feeling of comfort that everything is going to be just fine. She set us up for the final conflict!

  • jite4vanquish

Probably because whether they could smell her or not, at least her carotids weren’t exposed.

  • ~21Twilight21~

Did we skip chapter 24 or is it just me that can’t find it?? Lol!

  • http://twitter.com/MsEdward_Cullen Mrs Edward Cullen

there u go…weird i didnt find it either I think cus the tag was missing. I added it and voile! http://www.breakingdawnmovie.org/lets-re-read-breaking-dawn-together-chapter-24/

  • More_than_My_Own_Life

Funny that the only thing that could pull Bella away from a
naked Edward, was the mention of her daughter; well that & the thought that
they would be back for round 2 very soon ;)

    Lol at Alice’s
closet creation & her comment when she sees what Bella is wearing. I also think it’s funny how SM disguises Alice saying a curse
    word.

Ok so now we know that they were still planning to leave
Forks, but Jacob was having none of that & makes plans of his own by
talking to Charlie. Smh, wonder how much
of that conversation we’ll get to see in the movie . . .

A little strange that this is the first time we hear Edward
talk directly to Renesmee, & she understands him; very smart little infant.

Charlie arrives, smelling delicious & gets to see his
daughter & grand. Glad they told him
that he was being told the “public story”, but I wonder what he was thinking .
