Welcome to the BreakingDawnMovie.org’s Community Re-read!

While we impatiently wait for Breaking Dawn Part 1 to be released, we continue with our highly-popular, Community Re-Read!

Every Tuesday & Friday, I’ll post a breakdown for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on November 18th. Let’s get started, dig out your copy of Breaking Dawn, read the chapters together with us, and discuss anything you may find of interest that you might have missed the first or twentieth time around. Let’s continue our journey into FOREVER. 1 MORE CHAPTER TO GO!

Chapter 18:There Are No Words For This

I hope you all have a strong stomach(which I do not) because it’s going to be a bloody and graphic ride. Bella tries to prevent her cup of blood from spilling and this sets off a series of broken bones via the baby. Bella goes limp and Rosalie speeds upstairs with Edward and Jacob hot on her trail.

Pg. 349-350 “Morphine!” Edward yelled at Rosalie. “Alice-get Carlisle on the phone!” Rosalie screeched. The room I followed them to looked like an emergency ward set up in the middle of a library. The lights were brilliant and white. Bella was on a table under the glare, skin ghostly in the spotlight. Her body flopped like a fish on the sand. Rosalie pinned Bella down, yanking and ripping her clothes out of the way, while Edward stabbed a syringe into her arm. “What’s happening, Edward?” “He’s suffocating!” “The placenta must have detached!”  Somewhere in this, Bella came around. “Get him OUT!” she screamed. “He can’t BREATHE! Do it NOW!” Rosalie’s hand came up with a scalpel. “Let the morphine spread!” Edward shouted at her. “There’s no time,”Rosalie hissed. “He’s dying!” Her hand came down on Bella’s stomach, and vivid red spouted out from where she pierced theskin. Bella jerked, but didn’t scream. She was still choking. And then Rosalie lost her focus. I saw the expression on her face shift, saw her lips pull back from her teeth and her black eyes glint with thirst. I launched myself at Rosalie, jumping across the table without bothering to phase. As I hit her stone body, knocking her toward the door, I felt the scalpel in her hand stab deep into my left arm. My right palm smashed against her face, locking her jaw and blocking her airways. I used my grip on Rosalie’s face to swing her body out so that I could land a solid kick in her gut; it was like kicking concrete. She flew into the door frame, buckling one side of it. Then Alice was there, yanking her by the throat to get her into the hall. And I had to give it to Blondie-she didn’t put up an ounce of fight. She wanted us to win. “Alice, get her out of here!” Edward shouted. “Take her to Jasper and keep her there! Jacob, I need you!”

Pg. 351-355  *This part is actually good. Jacob and Edward make a fantastic team as Jake begins CPR on Bella and Edward begins to deliver the baby via his own way of a C-section.    “Get her breathing! I’ve got to get him out before-“Another shattering crack inside her body, the loudest yet, so loud that we both froze in shock waiting for her answering shriek. Nothing. Her legs, which had been curled up in agony, now went limp, sprawling out in an unnatural way. “Her spine,” he chocked in horror. “Get it out of her!” I snarled, flinging the scalpel at him. “She won’t feel anything now!” I could hear her heart, thumping unevenly. Keep it going, I thought fiercely at her, blowing another gust of air into her body. You promised. Keep your heart beating. The next sound jolted through me, unexpected, terrifying. The sound brought back the fight in the clearing so many months ago, the tearing sound of the newborns being ripped apart. I glanced over to see Edward’s face pressed against the bulge. Vampire teeth-a surefire way to cut through vampire skin. She coughed back at me, her eyes blinking, rolling blindly. “You stay with me now, Bella! Do you hear me? Stay!” And then her body was suudenly still under my hands, though her breathing picked up roughly and her heart continued to thud. I realized the still ness meant that it was over. The internal beating was over. It must be out of her. It was. Edward whispered.“Renesmee.”  So Bella’d been wrong. It wasn’t the boy she’d imagined. I didn’t look away from her red-spotted eyes, but I felt her hands lift weakly. “Let me…give her to me. Renes…mee. So…beautiful.” And then she gasped-gasped in pain. By the time I looked, it was too late. Edward had snatched the warm, bloody thing out of her limp arms. My eyes flickered across her skin. It was red with blood-the blood that had flowed from her mouth, and fresh blood welling out of a tiny double-crescent bite mark just over her left breast. “No, Renesmee,” Edward murmured, like he was teaching the monster manners. With a last dull ga-lump, her heart faltered and went silent. “What are you waiting for?” I choked out breathlessly, pumping her heart again. “Take the baby,” Edward said urgently. “Throw it out the window.” *    BWAAAAAAAHAHA ok I’m sorry that was funny to me.        “Give her to me,” a low voice chimed from the doorway. Edward and I snarled at the same time. “I’ve got it under control,” Rosalie promised. “Give me the baby, Edward. I’ll take care of her until Bella…” “Move your hands, Jacob.” Edward had a syringe in his hand-all silver, like it was made from steel. “What’s that?” “My venom.” I heard the jolt in her heart, like he’d shocked her with paddles.  While I pushed the now-viscous blood through her arteries, I watched what he was doing. It was like he was kissing her, brushing his lips at her throat, at her wrists, into the creases at the inside of her arm. But I could hear the lush tearing of her skin as his teeth bit through, again and again, forcing venom into her system at as many points as possible. I saw his pale tongue sweep along the bleeding gashes, but before this could make me sick or angry, I realized what he was doing. Where his tongue washed the venom over her skin, it sealed shut. Holding the poison and the blood inside her body. I blew more air into her mouth, but there was nothing there. Just the lifeless rise of her chest in response. I kept pumping her heart, counting, while he worked manically over her, trying to put her back together. But there was nothing there, just me, just him. Working over a corpse. Because that’s all that was left of the girl we both loved. This broken, bled-out, mangled corpse. We couldn’t put Bella together again. I knew it was too late. I knew she was dead. I knew it for sure because the pull was gone. I didn’t feel any reason to be here beside her. She wasn’t here anymore. So this body had no more draw for me. The senseless need to be near her had vanished. Or maybe moved was the better word. It seemed like I felt the pull from the opposite direction now. From down the stairs, out the door.

Pg. 356-357  He pushed her dead heart faster than I had. “She’s not dead. She’s going to be fine.” Turning away, leaving him with his dead, I walked slowly to the door. So. Slowly. I couldn’t make my feet move faster. This was it, then. The ocean of pain. I felt empty again, now that I’d lost my purpose. Saving Bella had been my fight for so long now.  And she wouldn’t be saved. I rested at the bottom step, gathering my strength to get out the door. Rosalie was on the clean end of the white sofa, her back to me, cooing and murmuring to the blanket-wrapped thing in her arms. She must have heard me pause, but she ignored me, caught up in her moment of stolen motherhood. Maybe she would be happy now. Rosalie had what she wanted, and Bella would never come to take the creature from her. The scent of blood in the air. Human blood. Rosalie was feeding it. Of course it would want blood. What else would you feed the kind of monster that would brutally mutilate its own mother? My strength came back to me as I listened to the sound of the little executioner feeding. I felt the tremors rock me from head to toe, and I didn’t not try to stop them. Sam had been right. The thing was an aberration-its existence went against nature. A black, soulless demon. Something that had to be destroyed.

Pg. 359-360  *This chapter ends on the most bizarre note…ever. As Jacob prepares to kill baby Renesmee, and possibly Rosalie, Jacob begins to feel things that even he doesn’t understand.    The trembling was getting tighter and faster. I coiled myself, preparing to spring at the blond vampire and rip the murderous thing from her arms with my teeth. I leaned forward and felt the heat begin to change me while the pull toward the killer grew-it was stronger than I’d ever felt it before, so strong it reminded me of an Alpha’s command, like it would crush me if I didn’t obey. The murderer stared past Rosalie’s shoulder at me, its gaze more focused than any newborn creature’s gaze should be. Warm brown eyes, the color of milk chocolate-the exact same color that Bella’s had been. My shaking jerked to a stop; heat flooded through me, stronger than before, but it was a new kind of heat-not a burning. It was a glowing. Everything inside me came undone as I stared at the tiny porcelain face of the half-vampire, half human baby. All the lines that held me to my life were sliced apart in swift cuts. Everything that made me who I was-my love for the dead girl upstairs, my love for my father, my loyalty to my new pack, the love for my other brothers, my hatred for my enemies, my home, my name, my self-disconnected from me in that second-snip,snip, snip-and floated into space. A new string held me where I was. A million steel cables all tying me to one thing-to the very center of the universe. The gravity of the earth no longer tied me to the place where I stood. It was the baby girl in the blond vampire’s arms that held me here now.  Renesmee.

*I will admit that I didn’t get it the first time around. But now coming back, it’s like Renesmee is the one who did the imprinting, kind of flirty too! Lol. And Bella…poor Bella, this is where I get torn in the saga. To me all this is simply not worth it. So after all she has been through to have it end by having her belly torn apart and her dead naked body covered in blood is simply a tragic waste. Carlisle is not going to be well when he returns to see all of this…in his library. :(

As soon as I read the imprinting scene for the first time, I yelled out loud: I KNEW IT I KNEW IT! I could tell from the time that SM described imprinting between Quil and Claire that something like this might happen to Jacob. I just didn’t know who, when, or where. Then when SM kept hinting about the bigger Bella got the greater Jacob felt like he could not leave Bella…..I just knew.

  • jite4vanquish

I absolutely agree and love everything you wrote. I hope to see your after BD post somewhere. Can’t wait! Mrs. E. C. Thanks for the re-read…as always, you have done a fantastic job!

  • BellasLoveSPIDERFLIPPY

Heeeyy! I’m a Dutchie as well :) Where did you go to the marathon?
I spent half an hour only calming myself down and then another falling a sleep LOL

  • BellasLoveSPIDERFLIPPY

Yeeeesss! But not at the premiere (I wish! LOL), there were Twilight marathons here in Holland and then at midnight Breaking Dawn. :) Believe me , it’s worth the wait!

  • Laura Scully

I know but having the Jacob we know and love imprint on a baby seems strange. Imprinting in general is gross to me, but imprinting on a baby is a little weird.

  • Lotteoostenga

Oh gawd i really Dont remember! But turning page was plAyed during the wedding and a part of ‘the morming after’ Omg That wedding reception…. Haha You Will see!

  • Bmaloney08

    Hi Guys

I saw it it South Africa last night.  It is seriously THE BEST out of all the Twilight movies!!  Everything is there!  Bill did not leave out anything from the book.  Bill Condon is a GENIUS!

  • Samketricia

um ohk definetly not how i expected it wud end

  • ifonly2011

I have absolutely loved these re-reads! I’ve read bd 4 times now but from these re-reads I get a whole lot more from each chapter :)
This is probably my most anticipated scene from the book…can’t wait to see how they’ve portrayed it! How gory it’s going to be! There’s got to be blood! lots of it and I can’t wait to see Jake finally get vent some anger at Rosalie. Funny how she gets it under control just as the baby is born!
There’s the noises too….Bella’s spine breaking, the sound of Edwards teeth tearing through the membrane….ewww! and then to see Edward gently biting her and sealing the skin….I know what’s going on is horrific but part makes me go ahhh ;)
I never read between the lines where the imprinting is concerned until I started posting on here and some of my twisisters talked about how Jacob’s pull to Bella even early on was always leading up to the last paragraph in this chapter. Now I see it in black and white! Jacob knew she was dead because the pull had gone…..nope the pull’s downstairs. I still like to think he loved Bella for who she was but now I see he “needed” her to fulfill his destiny….wow got a bit deep there!!!!!!
Anyway for those who have seen it….I’m soooooooo envious, but on the plus side I’ve got two more days of exciting anticipation!!!!!

  • Anne

The one in Enschede, there were so many people! You don´t hear many people talk about Twilight here, so I was really surprised.

  • ifonly2011

I feel exactly the same…..why is Edward’s actions so erotic???!! Afterall it’s all part of the horror story that is Renesmee’s birth!!!!

  • ifonly2011

That’s a good way of thinking about it! Jacob may not be the father but his bond is still very strong. And we’ll never know about Jacob and Renesmee as equal adults….our imaginations have to do that for us. :)

  • ifonly2011

I think you hit the nail on the head, we had 3 and a half books with human Bella and such a short time with vampire Bella. One of the reasons the saga is so successful is because we all want MORE!! I personally loved vampire Bella and can’t wait for it to be portrayed on film (in another year!).

  • Gina

I think the reason they were going to transform her was not necessarily to prevent another pregnancy, but because they thought it was inevitable–that the only way Bella would pull through would be as a vampire.

I know I was being silly with that, “Let’s have another baby” line. Edward would never allow it, of course. This time, when he says he’s not touching her again until she’s been changed, he’d mean it. He wouldn’t want to risk her life, again.

Of course, Bella would argue that, now that they know what to expect, the outcome wouldn’t have to be so horrific. Most women forget about the trauma of childbirth, and that’s why people have siblings (most women do–I haven’t, and that’s why my son is going to be an only child), and I can totally see Bella being willing to take that risk, again. The way she sees it, if things go awry, they can easily transform her into vampire.

  • Midnighteclipse

I never realised so many fans disliked the whole imprint/ son thing! I don’t get why. To me this book was awesome, the wedding, honeymoon, pregnancy, wolf pack and the birth, I couldn’t see any of this coming and that’s what I love about it, it wasnt predictable. I did guess toward the end of this chapter the imprint thing and I gotta say it was not creepy to me, almost an “awww” jacobs finally happy moment. It’s not incestuous at all because he doesn’t look at her that way, he’s her protector and the fact Edward called him son was not a big issue coz at the end of the day jake was gona probably marry her and he would have been his son in law! I got totally lost in all of these books but I try not to think to much about it coz if you do then the whole vampire thing is so wrong anyway- Edward is a grandad-ish being 90 years older than Bella!
Let’s enjoy the books for what they have given us all and be glad Stephanie Meyer had a dream that gave us Twilight! Oh and let’s not forget it brought Rob pattinson to us all!!
By the way, fave books in order, twilight, new moon, breaking dawn, eclipse.

I would really LOVE a good spoiler-filled review of BD now! With info on where each song is in the movie, which song is playing in the birth/death/imprint scene, and exactly where does the movie end. I’m sooooo curious! :) )

  • Tecas_2

I actually don’t agree. I don’t think the way Jacob imprinted was creepy at all. And I think is normal that Edward calls Jacob “my son”. I mean Edward thinks is about to die and he trusts and completely relies on Jacob to keep Renesmee safe and he is also much older than Jacob. So it is kind of a father/son relationship.
I can’t wait till i see the movie

  • Shalista

Thats the way I see it too! Forget team Jacob, he’s fickle. Edward’s always been the one to give his all for her.

BD was my fave book because the characters change so much. I loved reading about Bella maturing and becoming a wife, a mum and a vampire. She appealed to me more as a vamp because then she is fierce, strong and don’t see Edward as a living god anymore (until now that part just pissed me off everytime she described Edward my eyes were rolling). Maybe it comes from the fact that my role-models are strong women.

I remembered when I read this chapter I was like : Wow gore much ? Then for the imprinting my eyes widened I didn’t know what to make of this, I thought it was unfair for Jake after all he’s been through to do that to him. I get the imprinting I think it’s lovely , I think Renesmee is a sweet character but maybe if I was the writer I would have write something “better” for him. But I get also that maybe he and Nessie were made for each other and that Jake’s love for Bella was wrong or misplaced.
I was anxious to see it on screen and boy ! Bill Condon and Melissa did a great job, it was strong romantic and cheesy (but cheesy good) at the same time.
The film itself is great, it’s like a mature Twilight (not that twilight was immature).
Can’t wait for everybody to see it to talk about it !!!!

  • Anonymous

less creepy than to be in love with a 109 years old walking dead…

  • Anonymous

I don’t think Bella had a choice other than becoming a vampire after the birth. If the only way of delivering the baby was by using vampire teeth, there’s no way to prevent venom from entering her system. :) Haha, can you imagine? “Let’s have another baby” hahahahaha So Bella.

  • Anonymous

LOL the mutt is imprinting on the ‘mutt’. I never thought about it that way, but Renesmee is a mutt of sorts. :)

Dangit, I wanted to know where Northern Lights is too! Oh well, 39 hours.

  • BellasLoveSPIDERFLIPPY

I went in Rotterdam.. It was CROUDED, but there were a lot of people over their 20s and a lot of guys so that was pretty cool! I went with my cousin and she’s not a twihard so she was VERY surprised to see people with Team Jacob and Team Emmett and stuff shirts and people carrying merchandise and all… LOL

  • jite4vanquish

    I agree…great post to a great post…hahaha.

  • jite4vanquish

I am with you….half the fun is the anticipation. I know I will go see it more than once. I will see it Friday with two of my friends. I will see it again with my daughter. And I may go see it again just because I want to. Hehehe.

  • jite4vanquish

That is interesting…your order of favorite books. My favorite is Eclipse. The only reason BD is not my favorite is because it is the very last and there was no more to look forward to.

  • jite4vanquish

I was just thinking…those people who did not join us in this re-read sure did miss out. I have enjoyed this thoroughly. I have learned so much from all of you. It has made the time fly while waiting for the opening of BD. it has also increased my anticipation and excitement for this movie. I will be thinking about all of my twisisters while watching the movie….it will feel like I am sharing it with all of you. I hope to see all of you back here for the rest of this re-read before BD part 2. Until then…I really want to hear what eveyone’s favorite parts of the movie are and how you all like the soundtrack etc.
Thank you , Mrs. EC, and thank you Will!

I’m so glad to hear that, Bmaloney08!  Thanks for not giving out too much info.  I will see it Friday night.  :)

  • Twiheart

Yes, thank you, MrsEC and Will.   All these re-reads have given me that extra little spark each day to start my engine.    All of the opinions expressed have been enlightening, funny, intriguing, and I feel a type of bond with all of you in our love for this Saga.   Can’t wait to see the movie.  I hope all the important things so powerful to the story will be in the film.

  • Twiheart

I guess I’m weird, but I kinda like the imprinting thing.   I know it kind of takes away choice, but when one becomes so strongly bonded to one who becomes the center of their universe, how unhappy could they be.

Apparantly imprinting doesn’t necessarily mean that everything in this imprinted couple’s world is unrealisticly perfect.   Emily’s scared face came from a moment of anger from Sam, and they were imprinted, but no love is perfect all the time, but true love’s bonding is permenant…..yes, LG, kind of like geese.

I know that Geese and some other animals mate for life (they are monogamous), but I never learned if a mate is killed if the goose or gander would eventually find another mate and bond “as long as they both shall live”.  Hmmm, I’ll have to research that.

  • Twiheart

I never saw anything weird in the imprinting concept of Jacob and a baby (or Quil and Claire for that matter), in this fantasy world where Renesmee would be about 17 and stay that way in a short amount of time, and Jacob, if remaining with the Cullen’s would always be 17.   Until Renessme is grown, their bonding is obviously very strong, non-sexual, but protective and caring.

While I always hoped for a Jacob/Leah unit, obviously he would never imprint with her, and apparantly imprinting brings a joy that surpasses ordinary love, so sweet, obnoxious Jacob will find happiness.   Just my take on it, anyway.  Too bad this is truly the end of Stephenie’s characters, but we always have our imagination to continue the Saga.

  • Twiheart

P.S. Another thought just hit me.  The shape-shifter gene only kicks in when there are vampires around.  If the Cullens leave soon, which I feel they will, the Quileute pack will continue to age.  Little Claire is 100% human, aging normally slow, so when she is of age, Quil will be about 15 years older than her, which is no problem…many couples have such an age difference.  Is the imprintation (is that a word?) a permanent thing or just when they are shapeshifters?   So many questions.  It’s a good think Stephenie ended the story as beautifully and complete as she did.

  • Anonymous

I wonder that is a very interesting question TH.  Now you have me wondering…! ttysoon.

  • Anonymous

I think you took over for me with your theories TH.

  • MeadowLupine

Yeah, that was fantastic. What I loved most about it is it shows Rosalie’s care for the baby, and kinda for Bella. She let them kick her arse. Also, I loved that a very dangerous situation came up and Edward and Jacob ended it pronto. There was NO messing around there. Threat? Done, over, she’s out of here.

  • Anonymous

I love the soundtrack, been listening to it over and over, I got it the day it was out via Amazon.:)) All set to see the movie Friday morning at 10:30am

  • MeadowLupine

I hear you. I miss his longer hair terribly. I think they should have done extensions or something. The long hair was just SO iconic.

  • MeadowLupine

Hi Ronnie! Could you give some examples of what you’re talking about with Bella being sick with power? And the ass kissing you reference? I’d love to know what you’re referring to…  Also with the idea that her needs came first, I thought one of the themes of the book was sacrifice. I mean, she gave her daughter a locket that said, “more than my own life,” because she was willing to die for her. I’d love to understand though where you’re getting your perspective, ’cause I’m curious.

  • MeadowLupine

yayy, I really appreciate you sharing your perspective here. It actually really helps me understand the response a lot of people had to the books. I imagine it probably felt a lot like losing the Bella we knew to have her go through all these changes. I can totally understand your grief. And I can kind of feel it too, actually. One of the things I loved so much about the first 3 books was the chronicle of this girl’s daily life in a place where she didn’t fit. In the last book, she does fit, and everything is kind of fantastical/storybook. Maybe it’s hard for us to relate to that because that kind of thing just isn’t possible (for any of us anyway).

But at the same time I see the last book as Bella coming into her own, finding her place in the world. There’s a *huge* loss with that for those of us who identify with the Bella who hasn’t yet found her place and longs to, but I still really loved the book for resolving that for her. I loved Breaking Dawn, but yes, it really does take us into another chapter of Bella’s life completely.

Y’know, in many cultures, weddings were seen as a time of lament and loss when it comes to the girl getting married. There have been a lot of cultural correlations between the white veil and ghostliness  (seeing the girl as dying, in a way). In many places in the world, a wedding was saying goodbye to that girl forever, as she went off into her new life and could no longer be a child. Maybe we kind of feel that grief with Bella, too.  She’s no longer like that part of us that is still a young girl looking for love and belonging.

  • MeadowLupine

Right, and he’s saying the things he thinks he will never get to say. In that moment, he knows this man will care for his daughter for the rest of their lives together, and he will never get that chance again to call him son.

  • MeadowLupine

I don’t think it’s like he’s in love with her… I think it’s more like he’s utterly devoted to her, tied to her, for forever. She’s a baby, so his tie is more like a brother or father at this point. I don’t think there’s even a shred of anything romantic going on.

  • MeadowLupine

It’s my understanding that as long as a wolf continues to phase, he can stay permanently about 27 (not 17). I understood vampires being around as only the *impetus* for the gene kicking in, not it staying kicked in. Besides, even if it is more the way you are thinking, he’ll always have Renesmee around, and she’s part vampire, so that would be enough to keep the gene going. Also, I think imprinting is absolutely, ironclad permanent. It happens in a moment, and can never change after that.

  • Laura Scully

    Yeah, but Edward is HOT!

  • Gina

Quil is going to be pissed when he finds out Jake only has to wait approximately seven years.

I kinda like it too !
