TWILIGHT’S KRISTEN STEWART ON GROWING UP, GETTING 

MARRIED, AND GIVING BIRTH—AS MILLIONS LOOK ON.

Lynn Hirschberg: Everyone knows you as Bella Swan, the heroine of the Twilight series, whose penultimate installment, Breaking Dawn Part 1, premieres on November 18. What audiences may not know is that you’ve been acting since you were a child. How did you get your start?
Kristen Stewart: It’s weird, because I would be the last person in my school to be in plays, but I was forced to sing a song in a school thing. I sang a dreidl song, which is funny for me. I’ve never celebrated Hanukkah—it wasn’t in my upbringing, but it was one of those deals where everybody has to pick a song or participate somehow in the chorus. It wasn’t the normal dreidl song; I can’t really remember the words, but it was a more serious dreidl song. The dreidl was huge, it was really honored. And that’s how I met my agent, who was in the audience. I was eight. I was nine when I did my first movie, The Safety of Objects.

Did you do any commercials, or did you go straight into films?
I did two commercials, one for Porsche, but I was definitely not the type of child one would cast in a commercial or any TV that you’d typically go out for as a young kid. I wasn’t the type of kid who would be in stuff that kids watch. I wasn’t cutesy.

In 1999 David Fincher cast you as Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room. He likes to do dozens of takes for each scene. Was that difficult, as a child?
I didn’t realize that 80 takes wasn’t normal. But it’s funny: Some of my proudest moments from film sets are in Panic Room. My character had seizures. Just being able to say, I was 10 years old and I broke all the blood vessels in my eye on that take, is cool. It was fun.

You had a tomboy quality, which was unusual.
I have brothers, and that so-called boyish quality was something that I was deathly self-conscious about when I was younger. I was, like, No, I’m a girl. Actually, I’m still embarrassed to say that.

But it sets you apart from other young actresses. And it made you more interesting.
I don’t really know what to say. I just knew I wanted to work. And I did. I was working when I read the script for Twilight. I read the script before I read the book. I actually did the audition before reading the book, which was kind of crazy. Obviously, I tore all four books apart over the course of three years, but initially I had no idea that Twilight was such a big deal.

Did you have a particular interest in vampires? All young girls like vampires.
I fucking love me a vampire [Laughs]. I was 17 when I read Twilight, and at the time it was so perfect for me. The script was about young kids who think they can handle stuff that they just can’t. And they’re going to do it anyway. Because, why not? Just torture yourself. I relate to that. Vampires are a little dangerous—and we girls like to test ourselves.

I can’t stop staring at the cover!  Kristen is just breathtaking!   I f*cking love me a vampire! ROTFL!  God, I love her.

    She’s so gorgeous! one of the best photo shoots of hers! but i still don’t get their need to airbrush it so much! i mean make-up for a photo shoot is obviously important for a magazine like W…. but that much photoshop-ing is just not important…. at least for her! i mean she’s naturally so beautiful with amazing skin and everything! but they airbrushed these photos to the point of not recognizing her anymore! she’s beautiful the way she is…. she doesnt need photoshop..  but then again W does it to all the cover models!!…. so uh yeah whatever! I LOVE KSTEW!! :)

    Elle UK has always been my most favorite Kristen’s photoshoot until W mag. This is the best photoshoot Kristen have ever done! She again proved that she is like a chameleon and rock any look. I esp. love her hair style.

    I think, there is not that much photoshop here as it was in Vogue cover. And  this is something like the rule of W magazine to do the extreme changes on the person and make her hardly recognizable. But i wouldn’t mind to see Kristen in such photoshoots more in the future .

    Yeah me too…. i’d love to see outtakes…. and totally they slimmed her nose, tooo smooth skin…. and higher cheekbones…. she’s so beautiful the way she is…. but ur right that’s is a rule of W to make normally beautiful people to look like plastics!

    I love the cover!!!! I think it’s fun that they glammed her up like this :) Who wouldn’t want to play dress up? That’s what actors are doing all the time. She looks gorgeous! :)

    True, but like you said its W so I expected it. However, photoshopping her already stunning green eyes to make them such an unnaturally bright green is going a bit too far for my taste even for W. I’m used to them always going photoshop and makeup crazy on all of their models, but photoshopping someone’s eye color THAT much is just plain weird. I still love it and think she looks incredible though!

    I don’t object to photoshoots doing classic era but the eye make-up could have been better. The makeup artist should have studied Kristen’s eyes especially her eyelids.

    Love the interview. I love me some f*king Kristen! I think she looks fantastic. People this is a magazine cover, please stop saying she looks plastic or ugly, or too much makeup etc etc. The photographer and make up people were obviously going for a different type of look with Kristen, and while I love me some natural Kristen, it’s awesome to see her look all catwalk style. Or else what would be the point of having celebs on magazine covers if they all had the same natural style going? Lol this magazine cover is what you call art! And it’s okay to be different.

    I think she looks fantastic too!  She is wearing a lot more makeup than she usually does—but if I read correctly the photographer was going for The Valley Of The Dolls Look.  Hey we all know she is a natural beauty, there is no doubt about her not needing the makeup.

    I checked that website out. Jeeesh I thought I had clicked onto a street fight or smth. People there are crazy with hate. I mean they loathe Kstew. It’s okay to criticise someone when they are doing their job eg interview, photo calls and movies…but err what’s happening on that site is ugly. You don’t call someone ugly and the other adjectives these people used. Clearly they are deranged and uneducated morons. And it’s better to ignore them, than spend time arguing with them. Its pointless. But what people are saying on this post is okay when compared to that website. Now I need to go and wash my brain out.

    Haha I agree. I think out of the two Rob is actually the lucky one. Kristen seems like a special girl, not only in terms of outer beauty but who she is inside (that we know of from watching and listening to her).

    I will practically buy a magazine with only KRISTEN STEWART from front to back cover! every pages with her whole body and close-up pictures! She’s so beautiful even without make-up! But in this particular issue of W MAGAZINE, she looks stunning with a touch of Elizabeth Taylor’s (CLOPATRA)!!!
