Is the Breaking Dawn Birth Scene Causing Seizures?

Breaking Dawn Seizure

A man from California says he had a seizure while watching the birth scene in Breaking Dawn Part 1, leading him to pass out in the theater.

Brandon Gephart and Kelly Bauman said they were watching “Breaking Dawn: Part One” at a theater Friday night when Brandon sudden began convulsing during a graphic birthing scene.

Brandon said he doesn’t remember anything until he woke up on the theater floor, but Kelly said he was, “convulsing, snorting, trying to breathe.”

A man from Utah is reporting a similar experience-

The couple says one scene flashes bright light on the audience and the scene is incredibly graphic. That’s when the husband, who doesn’t want to be named for fear he could lose his job, says this stimulation made him pass out and his body shake.

“I didn’t really remember what happened after that I think I blacked out. According to her, I was shaking and mumbling different noises,” he said.

His wife was sitting by his side, “He started mumbling and he was blinking on and off with his eyes at that point. I was kneeling in front of him slapping his face,” she said.

Obviously many questions remain–are these reports accurate? Is the movie the cause? How widespread is the problem if it’s true?

Everyone should be able to enjoy the experience of this new addition to the Twiligt Saga, so let’s hope the movie is not at the heart of these claims, and everyone is safe no matter the cause.

I’m with Twiheart here, TPAAT. It’s probably best for your daughter for you to be calm and present for her. You can’t take on educating the ignorant masses. Leave that up to Twiheart and I, haha… No, but really, we’ll try, and I can imagine it is immensely frustrating for you. Just try to be aware that each new poster that comes in here is clearly not reading the more educational posts, and that there is a *lot* of ignorance out there about seizures and flashing lights and similar stimuli. I’m sorry for what your daughter and you went through, and I’m sure all of us who do understand better extend our empathy to you both. I hope you can get to the bottom of what happened with her, and that these occurrences lead to better understanding overall about what can set off brains to seize. Maybe this  string of seizure episodes will lead to some advancement with neurology?

  • MeadowLupine

Wow, I *loved* the woman who played Kaure. I thought she did a brilliant job. She scared the crap out of me when she said “death,” too, and I wasn’t expecting to be that affected by it. I was really pleased with their choice there.

As for your “just a movie,” comment, it comes off as a little patronizing to those who are affected by seizure disorders. I do not believe that any issues are Summit’s fault, but I would like to see little more sensitivity to people who have brain disorders. Seizures can be brought on by shadows and sunlight hitting the eyes wrong, so imagine what flashing lights in a movie can do? Again, not Summit’s fault, but this *is* a real phenomena, and if you’re not a doctor or neurologist, you really don’t have expertise to be making judgments on this issue, do you? You come off as especially ignorant when you tie a seizure to “negative emotion,” as if that would have anything to do with why someone would seize…

  • MeadowLupine

Like someone else in here said, I have a very hard time believing you’re a doctor, with the grammar and spelling errors in your post. And your post comes off as conspiracy theorist and paranoid. Yeah, the nasty reviews were annoying, cynical and cooler-than-thou. Yeah, that really sucks. But do you really think a “they” is going to come up with some vast conspiracy to discredit the movie due to seizures? Our media is driven in large part by *sensationalism*, and a lot of that is our own fault because as consumers we listen to that drivel, thus encourage it. I believe all the reporting on seizures is, for the most part, driven by this sensationalism. However, I also do believe there have been some legitimate cases of seizing with this movie, and though I don’t think Summit or any of the movie makers should be liable for this, I do think a calm, reasonable discussion about warnings or other options could take place between Summit and those affected or concerned. I think also that jumping to the conclusion that someone must not be a fan of the books if they report seizing is shortsighted. Also, the biggest clue that you do not have a medical education comes from your comments on what can trigger a seizure. Movies are exactly the kind of thing that can unmask a neurological condition, especially as they become more stimulus-filled with the advance of movie-making technology (something I and others appreciate, but hope people will take caution with).

I loved the movie and my bf liked it (I think), but the credits gave him a headache and made him feel weird. He had to look away. I didn’t mind it personally, and kinda liked the personality of the credits. They were kind of rock ‘n roll, or something… But I do know this kind of thing can affect people. My bf gets migraines sometimes, so maybe he was more prone to be affected. I’ll have to ask him if he started feeling weird earlier in the movie or if it was just the black/red/white flashing of the credits. My bf is not one to comment on things like this either, so it must have really bothered him.

  • Ontopadz

i started sweating on the red lights but it went away at the end of the movie and no its not cause we wanna make it look bad you idiot

  • lordisafag

thaqts really funny u fucking dick head

  • Ointopadz

yeah right your a doctor and you can’t spell SYSTEM u retard

  • Ontopadz

hi i just started sweating for no reason wen the birthing scene came on but nothing like that has ever happened to me before. would u know why at all

  • Melissa Turner

I totally agree!! “what a Marshmallow!!” LOL!! xx I thought the film was amazing n im going 2 watch it again next week!! I cant get enough of it!! LOL!!

  • TwilightLocal

You couldn’t have said it better. I have a close friend who suffers from this. She can’t drive at night because the lights are too much contrast in the darkness. She can’t even go to clubs because of the strobe lights and colorful effects!

…Not sure what the loser below is so pissed off about. Take a chill pill before YOU have a seizure!

  • Isea…:)

    OMG…r u serious…I wished they would have showed more….come on people…lol

  • Steveperry_1981

It’s too bad that something like this happened, but that doesn’t mean twilight is bad. Those people will just have to not watch the movie anymore, or fast forward that part. I hope they don’t decide to edit this scene when it comes out on dvd and ruin it for everyone else!!!

  • asc8989

At the midnight showing I was at a man had a seizure but it was when Bella realizes she is pregnant, which is way before the birth scene.  I know that fast flashing/flickering lights can trigger seizures but I don’t remember the flashing during the birth scene to be very fast….

  • FeliciaS

This is COMPLETELY true. I had a seizure for the very first time on sturday night while watching the movie. I passed out, was convulsing, peed my pants while i was unconscious, and vomited later that night. This is a SERIOUS problem…

  • FeliciaS

Thank you for having an open mind. I am a 19 year old female with no history of seizures. I had one during the movie. Urinated while unconscious, convulsing, the whole 9 yards. I was so scared that there was something wrong with me….

  • newborneyes

I´m sorry my mistakes I was trying to write I´m not a doctor but I think writing fast is not a good idea  and I have a bad spelling cause I barely know how to speak english and never really have the chance to practicew anyway I´m sorry I did not know that but I was mad because I been reading a lot of bad things of the movie and I never stop to think that they were not saying the movie was causing them they were saying that the flash in the scenes were causing them

  • newborneyes

Thankyou for your  polite response! I´m not a doctor and that´s what I try to write  but I ended writing the oposite I have bad writing grammar and spelling cause english is my second language I never wanted to make an statement just my opinion I now know that the  note was talking about the flashing and the lights were causing the seizures not the movie for it self

  • newborneyes

Carol I´m not a doctor ok, I was writing fast and try to write I´m not a doctor in the beggining of my comment but  I was just  saying that I didn´t believed the movie was causing seizures but I didn´t give it much tought to the flashing lights

  • Danielle

I had a seizure during the movie to.. i went to see it with my mother and sister when the birthing scene came up i started to feel like i was going to have a seizure i have not had one in four years but i know when i am about to have one so i told my mom so i closed my eyes hoping it would go away when i slid down the chair and started shaking and i stoped breathing then started turning blue… i woke up to a man sitting me on the floor about to give me cpr.. when i came to everyone in the threate was yelling my name.. so they called 911 and i went to the hospital

  • i hate you all

i hate you all. I actually fainted

  • Esh_12

When I heard about the seizures, I thought, okay, I can see that. I assumed the seizures came from the credit portion of the film. My mother is epileptic, and flashing lights and colors can bring on a seizure. But the birth scene? Nah. The flashing red, black, and white at the end could definitely do it, I think. It was a little hard for ME to sit through. But I had to see the Volturi

  • TeaParty_aka_AmericanTaliban

I had mentioned in a few comments that I thought it was the werewolf part leading up to the birthing scene that was causing this.  I think all the flashing leading into fast, odd camera angles and the additional color sequences combine to create a really nasty effect for those unlucky enough for it to happen to them.  They don’t have to change the content of the movie…just take out some of the flashing and rapid sequences of colors some.  I wish people would take it seriously because there was a story I read about someone’s son who knocked out 4 teeth and got injured really badly when he had a seizure.  If someone has a seizure for too long they can actually DIE, so this isn’t a joke at all.  It’s better to get the warning out and try to do something about that section of the movie…even if it means putting the same lighting as the previews on in the theater for that part.  Seeing those things in the darkness is part of the problem, afterall.

  • TeaParty_aka_AmericanTaliban

Farrah…you are assuming that this is happening to people who have epilepsy, but that’s not the case.  In fact, it doesn’t seem to be triggering seizures in people who have been diagnosed and are on medication.  Mostly it seems to impact people who get migraines.  My daughter had extensive testing after one unexplained seizure 3 years ago…CT, MRI, two EEGs…and guess what…they RULED OUT any seizure disorder.  The neurologist told us that if she went 6 months without another seizure then we could consider it a fluke and a one time deal.  Three years had passed.   The movie did NOT put out any kind of warning about them using rapidly flashing red, white and black lights.  None of the people I’ve seen say this happened to them were epileptics.  How, exactly, were any of these people supposed to know this might happen?  Again, remember…they are not epileptic, most never had any seizure before, and the movie did NOT issue any warnings.

  • TeaParty_aka_AmericanTaliban

My daughter does NOT have any seizure disorder.  She went through extensive testing due to having one unexplained seizure three years ago.  Epilepsy and seizure disorders were ruled out.  Even strobe tests during two EEGs did not produce seizure activity in my child.  They only indicated migraine headaches.

If you go see a movie about Vampires it bound to get gory and bloody. Its not only a love film it is also an action film. Like honestly people would do anything to gain money or popularity. Like who would believe that lie. I went to see the movie myself  with a group of 12 people and we are completely fine. No harm done. These so called seizure having people should get a job and get out of the little bubble they call home and do something more for there lives then accusing movies of causing so call seizures. Get a life people!!!

You were probably just nervous. I was.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CoraleComics?feature=mhum#p/u LegHitchThis

Well I watched it twice in the theater & survived. So I’m glad I’m not photo sensitive. I love mah flashes of light!

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyCooter★BTB

I don’t think I breathed through that whole scene. It was captivating! I think that’s what people were really doing. They weren’t getting enough oxygen to their brain and they were passing out. Do I sound like a doctor? lol

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyCooter★BTB

You said it sister! There’s no deleted scene I wouldn’t watch. I’m that weird.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CoraleComics?feature=mhum#p/u LegHitchThis

    Yes you do and I know! I was clenched onto my friends arm and she was clenched onto mine. We were like frantically hugging LOL. And I had 1 hand over my face silently screaming and whispering oh god. oh god! WTFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg! Ill never forget! I went through so many emotions watching that scene. Fear, happiness, sadness.. ;_;

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyCooter★BTB

OMG! That sounds almost identical to me and my best friends experience when we watched BD1!! That’s crazy!!!

  • Lnturner2001

Ok I went to the all day Twilight Marathon which started at 4pm and Breaking Dawn didn’t show until midnight; I said that to say this, don’t blame the movie for your health problems…I mean your an adult and you should know what hurts you and what doesn’t so I mean don’t go if you don’t want to hear the cracks and breaks and no the birth scene was not that graphic I actually expected more as with what happens in the book…..WOW PEOPLE REALLY????????

  • Cyn

Wow. It’s incredible how many people are making assumptions and making FUN of people for being “marshmallows” when the fact is that the seizures would have been caused NOT by the shock of the scene or queasiness, but by the flashing light during the scene. It’s well-documented that video games, videos, and anything else in which a person is exposed to flashing lights can trigger a seizure.

Maybe get your facts straight next time before you go making fun of people who have to live with a debilitating health condition.

  • Yankees817

i TOTALLY agree!! i dont think these are true at all! and even if they r, they had to know that it would be like that anyway. but they totally aren’t. come one really? they just dont want to see this AWESOME franchise succeed!

  • Wkathryn71

I couldnt reply to your other post but yeah! It must be a universal reaction to that scene! shoot it was hardcore. Well done bill condon because I didnt think we would get that much drama during the birthing scene. I thought she would pass out & we would see nothing.

  • ★FreezeBurn♥RobMyCooter★BTB

I really hope the rumors are true that the release date is Feb. 11 and the blu ray/dvd combo will have an extended cut. *fingers crossed*

  • Madysen

I was more concerned about Edward having a seizure than me having one.

  • Frl89

    I call bullshit!!!

  • Mia

I’m a huge fan of twilight the books mainly. I dragged my boyfriend to watch breaking dawn for my birthday and during the birth scene he had some kind of  seizure passed out then had another smaller seizure! He’s never had anything like it so we were a bit worried!
I think its odd how people are calling it BS and saying people are making it up! So many people have had the same thing!! We often go to festivals and the flashing lights have never been a problem!
I think if there had been a warning we would not have freaked out so much!!

  • ann

maybe the reason why that guy had seizures was because he was having epileptic attack

  • Mel_Australia

I should preface this by saying that I’m not a doctor, just a health science/ psychology student who has done a little research on what people are experiencing here. It could be that you were nervous and anxious and so absorbed in the film whilst watching that you experienced some very intense emotions (a common experience for those of us who love these books and films so much!) and so you were at a heightened state of physical alterness during the scene (it’s called the flight or fight response, and its purpose is to prepares the body to meet a perceived threat). It could also mean that you might have a predisposition (ie a tendency towards, but not a full blown disorder) to a seizure disorder or another neurological condition. Individuals who may not have a full blown seizure disorder (e.g. epilepsy) may have a neurological vulnerability that means they are most sensitive than most to certain material and they may experience nausea, feeling of disorientation or other symptoms of feeling ‘wierd’ (e.g. flashing red, black, white imagery, as was shown in the birth scene). The general medical advice to those who feel unwell or off colour during this scene has been to leave the cinema immediately. The distance you are sitting away from the screen, the size of the screen, and the darkness in the cinema can also be problematic, so it may be best to avoid watching it again until the DVD comes out and you can control the environment in which you view it. If you’re concerned about it, it may also be wise to speak to your doctor.

  • sadddddd

I passed out in the middle of the birth scene. No seizure though, just a fainting thing,

  • Steph

I’m only 10 and saw the movie with my mom and dad. weird, I still loved every second of the movie. (I can’t wait for the dvd because to avoid some ugly “talk” i had to leave the theater. my cue was when Bella first goes to the bathroom with that bag the first time
