‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Movie Deal

112 Comments March 28, 2012 by Filed Under: Fan Fiction, Twilight

According to an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Twilight fan fiction story turned New York Times bestseller, Fifty Shades of Grey may be turned into a movie!  Author E. L. James sold the movie rights to her trilogy books to Universal Studios and Focus Films for a rumored $5 million.  Here’s part of the interview with James.

“We went with Focus because they have a great background in handling difficult material,” and also because the studio gave the author the approvals she wanted, including script and casting. “This makes me sound like a control freak, doesn’t it?” she acknowledged with a laugh.

As for negotiating all the tricky bits pertaining to the books’ extremely graphic, kinky sex, James says, “I think that’s going to be a collaborative process. That’s a big word in Hollywood, isn’t it — PRO-cess.” Along the way, too, the fortysomething wife and mother of two teenage sons demonstrated a forcefulness that her dark hero Christian Grey might admire. “We always said that if we didn’t find a fit, we’d pack our bags and go home. Seriously. We’d have a wonderful week in Hollywood and go home,” she said. “But also, look, life is not a dress rehearsal. I didn’t want to get to be 90 and say, why didn’t I try something? This is a great opportunity. And I took it.”

I read a lot of Twilight Fanfiction, and Master of the Universe was one of my favorites. I started reading it when she first published it on fan fiction and waited patiently for her updates.  It was then pulled for it’s content, which she started posting the updates on her website.  I faithfully kept up with her updates and was extremely happy to hear about her book deal.

Many people have their opinions on this.  I, for one, am very happy for E. L. James and her success.  It was a suspenseful, intense, and eye popping story.  However, be warned….it’s not suitable for everyone.

I just remember looking at the Cosmopolis set photos of Robert Pattinson and thinking…..it’s Fifty!!!  LOL!

What are your thoughts on Fifty Shades of Grey and the movie deal?

     I tried, I really, truly honestly tried to read MoTU back when it was on ffnet but I just couldn’t do it… Little things like bad grammar and the fact that the story was set in Chicago and yet Bella took “lifts” to get to another floor, or went to the “loo”, etc… if you’re going to try to write like an American, get your jargon right! I’ve nothing against British authors but it’s pretty common knowledge to “write what you know” & I probably would have been more interested if she’d set it in England instead of trying so hard. Just my opinion. Commence the skewering. (;

    I am assuming that is what she did(all though I could be wrong) I have to read my EW magazine to find out if she did write them all at once I would not be surprised if she did lol and I agree with what ya said if  she would have publish them one by one she would have made tons of cash! :) but then again maybe she did who knows I hope so! these books are so FH!

    Honestly, I love Rob to death. But I just can’t see him paying Fifty. Even though Fifty is in some ways based on Edward, Rob just can’t deliver the level of terrifying intensity that’s needed to pull Fifty off. Rob’s gorgeous, and he was good in Twilight– but this story goes far deeper, far further down the rabbit hole– and he’s just not there as an actor.

    Do you know where I can find Master of the Universe?

    I am totally obsessed with Fifty Shades! I think its absolutely ridiculous that people think that Robert Pattinson should or would be good for the part. A) I could bet my life savings that there is no way in hell he would do it. and B) He would not play a good Christian. I love Rob just as much as the next girl, but Christian is way more sinister than Edward. The person who I’ve been picturing as Christian is Ian Somerhalder. He is very sexy and has those dark qualities about him.
    I am very excited about the movie, but I’m sure they will suger coat it. The true fans of the books will probably be a little disappointed.

    Fifty Shades of Grey….. oh so can’t get enough!  I just found out about these books in my Entertainment Weekly…… I have been obssessed with Twilght for 3 years, how did I miss this one!!!!  I have read the 1st and 2nd book, but trying to stop myself from rushing into the third….. I don’t want this to be over either!

    As much as I see Rob as Christian and not sure I can handle when they will be choosing someone else, but I don’t think Rob would do it…… He would really need to step it up a notch on his 6 pack!  :)   I’m thinking Ryan Gosling?

    Laters baby,

    Christian Grey HAS to be played by Ryan Gosling! I can’t see anyone else portraying him. I’m racking my brain trying to figure out who could play the innocent, yet strong willed Ana. Although I know that it is NOT Kristen Stewart or Scarlett Johansen. Hmmm….perplexed.
