Summit Entertainment, a LIONSGATE® company, announced today that the fourth installment in the blockbuster TWILIGHT SAGA franchise – THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 has grossed an estimated $701.3 million in global box office receipts since the film’s release on November 18, 2011. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 is on its way to becoming the highest grossing film in the series to date looking to surpass the worldwide box office gross of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON which tallied $709.8 million. The two other two films in the franchise THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE and TWILIGHT have each grossed $698.5 million and $390.4 respectively and the franchise continues to break records. Upcoming releases of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 internationally include Japan and China. Not only has the TWILIGHT SAGA’s global fan base supported the films during their theatrical release, but audiences worldwide have continued to support this cultural phenomenon both on and off the screen. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on February 11, 2012.
In their first announcement as heads of Lionsgate’s motion picture group, Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger revealed that the fourth “Twilight” film has passed $700 million in worldwide grosses. The duo said “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1″ will become the highest earner of the franchise so far, surpassing the $709.8 million worldwide cume from the third pic, “New Moon.”
This gives the vampire tentpoles a combined worldwide gross of $2.5 billion with the finale, “Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” due out Nov. 16. “Breaking Dawn — Part 1,” which hasn’t yet opened theaterically in China and Japan, will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD on Feb. 11.
Wall Streeters expect Summit’s “Twilight” franchise to inject $500 million of fresh cash into Lionsgate over the next five years.
Woo hoo! $701.3 MILLION!! Do you think Breaking Dawn Part 2 will surpass this? $710 Million? $750 Million?
From LA Times:
Bringing Hollywood’s two biggest independent film studios and the blockbuster young adult franchises “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” into one powerful entity, Lions Gate Entertainment has agreed to acquire Summit Entertainment for $412.5 million in cash and stock.
The two Santa Monica-based companies have engaged in on-and-off merger talks since late 2008 as Lions Gate has sought to bolster its library of film and TV properties and Summit’s investors have tried to find a way to cash in on the lightning-in-a-bottle success of its “Twilight” movie series, which has grossed $2.5 billion worldwide over four films.
The acquisition will provide a windfall to Summit’s investors, among them Ebay co-founder Jeff Skoll’s film company Participant Media and private equity fund operator Suhail Rizvi’s Rizvi Traverse Management. Summit’s investors previously received a $200-million dividend as part of a recapitalization in early 2011.
In an announcement issued (last) Friday, Lions Gate said the majority of the purchase price would be funded by cash on hand at Summit. The rest will be paid for by $55 million of Lions Gate’s cash reserves, $45 million from new debt issued by Lions Gate, and another $20 million of cash or stock that Lions Gate must issue within 60 days.
Summit comes into the deal with about $200 million in net debt, which is secured by that studio’s existing assets and will not be assumed by Lions Gate.
Summit was in net debt? Wow. I know we’re a week late posting this. What are your thoughts? How will this effect Breaking Dawn Part 2?20 Comments
Summit, the studio behind The Twilight Saga, is reportedly in talks to merge with Lionsgate, who are making the Hunger Games movies.
This isn’t the first time talks have happened behind closed doors according to Bloomberg, and neither studio is commenting at present. The current rumors are based on the word of three people “with knowledge of the situation,” according to Bloomberg, who broke the story.
This would allow the studios behind two of the biggest book-to-movie translations in recent memory to pool resources.
Summit was a tiny studio before it hit gold with the Twilight series. Lionsgate hopes to find the same success.
This deal could allow the studios to take on more projects like The Night Circus, which is a fantastic book from a first-time author that Summit recently picked up before it = hit shelves. Had Twilight not happened, it’s hard to imagine Summit having the resources to make the fanciful and fantastic book a reality on screen.
While the financials and terms are unknown, it’s hard to see the downside. As long as Edward Cullen doesn’t pop up in Hunger Games 8: Volturi vs. The Capitol, this sounds good to me!85 Comments
