Breaking Dawn Set Vandalised in Brazil?

MTV reported that the Breaking Dawn set in Lapa, Brazil has been vandalised by angry locals.  According to the claim, a toilet used by the crew was set on fire due to protests that the production has disrupted the town.  Here’s what they had to say:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn set has been targeted by a group of angry locals in Brazil.

According to Female First, a portable toilet that was used by the film crew was set on fire by protestors, who were annoyed by the disruption shooting had caused.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and co, who are currently filming the fourth installment of the vampire flicks in Rio de Janerio, have apparently outraged residents who have seen their town turned into a movie set.

The locals are said to have taken action by vandalising the toilet, as well as protesting in the streets to show their anger over the Twilight cast being in town.

Do you think it’s true?  So far all the reports coming from Brazil are good and that everyone is happy with how things are going.  Is this just another thing to add to the rumour bank?

**UPDATE** OK guys, I’ve seen some of the pictures posted in the comments and I’ve had a little look around our dear old friend ‘The Internet’. Yes, the article is true, it happened on Sunday AFTER shop owners and residence who lived in the street  couldn’t get access to their businesses and homes without proof  that they lived there.  While I don’t condone any type of violence or vandalism, I can certainly understand why they were angry.

As we previously reported,  a press conference was called the next day with the president of River Films Sergio Sa Leitao, Breaking Dawn Director Bill Condon and Producer Wyck Godfrey. Where they ensured that everything was fine and going according to plan.

Please rest assured that everything is fine, Robert and Kristen are perfectly safe. Security is tight and they’re well protected.

I hope this calms some of your fears -SnarkyDee ;)

Hmmm, Maybe we should take that comment to heart because all the verbal bashing that was done on here against people who had a legit gripe was honestly no better. They were violent in action but we (everyone on this post, myself included) was violent with words.

    Sticks and stones….

THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! I spoke with some one that was there, right after it happened and it wasn’t true. The crew had been putting fires as a technique to make the buildings look older!!!! It got the toilet by accident.
ALSO! Sergio Sa Leigiao of RioFilmes confirmed that this is what happened.
    IT WAS NOT ANGRY LOCALS!

I agree that arson is not the way to go about complaining, but I think many of the criticisms here that demonize those residents come from people who have probably never traveled to or lived in a developing country before. Life in other places is not like it is in the US. Setting fire to things in the street is rather common in urban Brazil when people are unhappy. It IS dangerous & rarely helps change things for the better, but some of the people living in Lapa have been overlooked by the government & their voices ignored for years. So when a rich, fancy, American film crew shows up to make a movie for ENTERTAINMENT & they are more important than the tax-paying, often poor residents, people get upset.

Oh yes, and setting the toilet on fire will make everything alright. Now who’s disrupting the town?

I understand how they can feel that the production has “disrupted” the town, but jeez, there’s no need to go crazy about it! It is/was (don’t know if they’re done filming there) only for a couple of days right?

The dancing/drinking in the streets, music, etc may look good on film (and it IS fun), but the reality of life for many living there is not as much of a party as its 5 minutes in a movie make it seem!

Wow I turn off the orgs tweets texted to me for a week & all heck hits the fan!

i doubt their fans or even know what movie is filming, or even that its twilight, or maybe they don’t even know twilight exists. even more so, they don’t care. its affecting their livelihood. it doesn’t solve things but that’s how people in south america react. they take the law into their own hands. and the world doesn’t revolve around twilight.

  • http://www.fanfiction.com/~youroasis MCNutters [Team Renesmee]

kids pulling a prank? doubt it. remember not EVERY single person knows or cares about twilight. its affecting their livelihood. this is a pretty common reaction in south america. where the government doesn’t give a crap about them so they take the law into their own hands. im not saying its justifiable but we should be more understanding. and obviously no one got hurt so that’s good.

  • http://www.fanfiction.com/~youroasis MCNutters [Team Renesmee]

its a developing country with a troubling government. like robpattz wifey and slaysweet said.

  • http://www.fanfiction.com/~youroasis MCNutters [Team Renesmee]

their not getting any of that. i bet they don’t even know what twilight is or care. their losing more money by closing down their businesses.

read a tweet and now another comment that it wasn’t locals at all but the crew.

hahaha… I think so :) Actually i think the next shoot will be done in Vancouver and then they go back to baton rouge louisanna :) … but we will see :)

  • kerbear585

I totally get why they would be mad because the fans for Twilight are a little crazy and want to be right there and see everything so it all can get very disrupting. Just hope that they can hold in there a little longer, they won’t be there too much longer I don’t think. Their city will be back in order soon :-)

The reason the locals were mad is b/c they forgot that they had to have proof of residence with them to access their homes. Some forgot & argued with the production ppl b/c of that…Sergio Sa Leigao (@ssl_riofilme) posted almost right after this that that was the only problem they had. Glad to see BDM cleared this up today on another post. But I have to say I’m extremely pissed at MTV for reporting this without checking 1) the sources & 2) the facts. So unprofessional IMO…
