Breaking Dawn Producer Talks Plans for Birth Scene

Producer of the Twilight films, Wyck Godfrey has a huge job on his hands:Breaking Dawn.  If you thought reading and or understanding the largest book of the saga was difficult, can you imagine being involved in making a movie for a story of this caliber? Whether its sex scenes, Isle Esme, or the 3-D debate Wyck assures us that they are listening to us the fans. Here’s what the producer had to say. Beware, spoiler alert!

Twilight Saga producer Wyck Godfrey has revealed how the filmmakers are considering handling Breaking Dawn‘s graphic birth scene, and why 3-D is still an option for the final installment of the franchise.

My wife’s an OB-GYN so we should bring her on set to make sure that if Edward is going to do an oral Cesarean, he really needs to make the proper incision with his teeth.” Then, he shared the anti-gore rational that, I have to admit, makes perfect sense:“I think the one thing that we’ve done that we’ve really done in all the films is keep them very subjective and keep them from Bella’s point of view. So the conversations we’ve had with Bill, is that we’ll try to do something similar here; you’re with Bella’s perspective and her point of view of what’s taking place in the rush around her, as she’s in intense pain. Not so focused, objectively, on her body and his body and that. So I think it’ll be something like that, in terms of trying to make the audience experience and feel the confusion, almost, of what’s happening to her.”

When rumors first broke in February that producers were considering going 3-D for Breaking Dawn, 67 percent of readers responding to a PopWatch poll didn’t like the idea. But Godfrey makes a reasonable case for that as well:

“We have considered it, and everything’s being discussed, but I know that part of a way to differentiate the two movies would be to have one be in 2-D, and when she becomes a vampire we move into 3-D. But we haven’t really gotten far enough to decide what we’re going to do. I’m of two minds of it, frankly, and I think everyone is; I don’t want to chase the format if it’s not organic and appropriate. If we think it is, we will.”

I personally don’t think 3-D is wise. But that’s why I’m not in the movie business. Maybe it will come out fantastic, but I’ll pass on a 3-D Breaking Dawn. Check out the full story here.

It’s still so early. Who knows what the Twi-Gods will decide.  I’m just greatful this film is being made…I’ll take whatever I can get. What are your thoughts?

I’ve never seen a movie in 3D (“old school”…) so I don’t have such a “big” idea of what expect, like some people already have. But I do have an opinion: I don’t think that a movie needs to be made in 3D to have “success”, I think that’s the right word. There are so many movies that weren’t made in 3D and they’re so great and amazing… We’ll just have to wait (and wait and wait!) to see how it’s going to be.
I also want to say that I appreciated your comment :)

  • MiaTwilightFan

Ok I must say I love the idea with the birth scene. Like in the first movie when Bella was bitten by James she didn't understand quite everything was going on around her but seeing from her perspective we could understand how she felt. I really don't wanna see every little detail how Renesmee will come out:D If they'll do it like in that scene in Twilight it will be perfect. And about 3D the second part will be great but for the fist one NO 3D!

  • CountryGirl414

I do not want a 3D movie! Everyone I've seen looks weird and hurts my eyes. Plus it doesn't seem like its all that much cooler anyway. They should stick to what we the fans like! Also, yes everything is from Bella's perspective, mostly…the birthing scene isn't of course, but even in the past whenever anything is happening to Bella, we see it from a 3rd person point of view…rarely do we get her real “view” and perspective. So they should just show whats happening to Bella and NOT try to make us feel like WE are her during that scene.

they should definitely do it in jacobs pov as well … and have him do voice overs haha.. like the chapter title for bellas birth scene: ” there are no words for this” jahhHHAhah the entire JaCOB book titles made me laugh my ass off,

    8. WAITING FOR THE DAMN FIGHT TO START ALREADY
    9. SURE AS HELL DIDNT SEE THAT ONE COMING
    10. WHY DIDNT I JUST WALK AWAY? OH RIGHT, BECAUSE IM AN IDIOT

    11. THE TWO THINGS AT THE VERY TOP OF MY THINGS- I- NEVER-WANT -TO-DO LIST
    12. SOME PEOPLE JUST CANT GRASP THE CONCEPT OF UNWELCOME
    13. GOOD THING IVE GOT A STRONG STOMACH
    14. YOU KNOW THINGS ARE BAD WHEN YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR BEING RUDE TO VAMPIRES
    15. TICK TOCK TICK TOCK
    16. TOO MUCH INFORMATION-ALERT
    17. WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE, THE WIZARD OF OZ? YOU NEED A BRAIN? YOU NEED A HEART? GO AHEAD. TAKE MINE. TAKE EVERYTHING I HAVE
    18. * THERE ARE NO WORDS FOR THIS ( *denotes my favorite hahha)

    ok yeah love it.

Tbh, I'll probably be skipping this movie. I would probably watch it online or something.

And seriously, I still don't like the 3D idea.

  • RoBstenLuvParisx3.CBfOrBD

Yeah I know you’re right ! I am going to try to be more optimistic :) . *cross fingers* xoxo

I hear ya…and hope they take our thoughts into consideration. ☺

I think PG13 will sum up what we’ll see: We’ll definitely get more sex scene than the book, but less than an R rating, (which I’m glad for. I get the point without having to see ‘intimate’ body parts) like in RMe, which was perfect. I’m more focused on the whole story, rather than just how many times we’ll see them in bed. (and I know we’ll get at least 3-4 good scenes there – Feathers, Headboard, Newly Vamped, and Last Call before fight – if all goes right) I’m just hoping for all of it…and curious to see what we’ll actually get. ♥

Exactly! I agree. The way it’s written is in Jacob’s pov and I don’t think they realize that because they keep mentioning Bella’s pov – Bella is unconscious through most of the birth. I hope they get this right!

  • Anonymous

I guess it really doesn’t matter whose pov we see it in because, like eclipse which was written only in Bella’s pov, we, the viewer get to see everyone’s point of view. Like Riley in Seattle, the volturi and so on…. As far as the gore, even if Jacob is the pov for the birth, it doesn’t have to be nasty, sickening blood. Just enough for effect. We all have imaginations.

  • crazy89

    i can't wait 4 Breaking Dawn 2 come out but i don't wanted 2 be in 3D hell 2 the NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • drunkster

I am also happy these films will be done but for me the best idea would be first part 2D and the second part 3D, or then both 2D.

I know most films are going to be 3D in the future but at this point is feels so commercial choice, too “Hollywood style glamour high technology shit.” Twilight is the ultimate love story, deep one. Not some light glitter.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Dreamrgal DrmrzCrzyWorld

lol I dont want the gore anyway :p I’m strictly voting for pg-13 . :D
They can do a lot of things. with pg-13. I agree about the imagination. AS much as we would like to see something on screen, it plays in our heads when we read the book anyway.

  • Tujucee

Did they forget that the birth scene is jacob's point of view?

  • MellabellaCullen

Ok…these people need to get it right! This part of the book is from Jacob's perspective, NOT Bella's! I don't mind seeing some of her POV during the birth scene so you can see what she is feeling but mainly most of the scene HAS TO BE WHAT JACOB IS SEEING, that is what made this part of the book exciting!…I really want to see Edward desperate trying to revive her, bringing Nessie into the world and the whole Rosalie drama during this part…everything has to be in there!!! By the way I think Rob's acting has gotten so much better he did so great in Eclipse! I can't wait to see him in this movie especially during this part and Isle Esme…but I won't be expecting much from Kristen, she just does not show any emotion and acts the same on every movie.

  • pinkaddiction23

I really don't want Breaking Dawn to be 3D. Alot of the time, the DVD's don't even come in 3D format, so why bother making it 3D for the cinema? If it comes out in 3D. I will most certainly be watching it in 2D.

As for the birthing scene, I really didn't want it from Bella's point of view. I like how we've had it in Eclipse, where we get things from a neutral point of view, not just Bella's. I want to see what's going on! :(

  • Wench

NO OH MY GOD NOT IN 3D I WONT GO SEE THE MOVIE !!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CUYYKSGMEYTTTXOU33QAOZRIO4 ME

OMG…when i read this scene i have imagined so bloody its unbelievable now i am reading this crap!!! ARE. YOU. SERIOUS.???? We have to see it from Jake's POV…i mean seeing Edward doing his best to get reneesme out of bella… Jacob frantically trying to keep bellas heart beating…kicking rosalie in the gut!!! I mean come on!!! If i hear that they are changing all of this…i am not going to even bother seeing it at the movies i'll just wait until it comes out in DVD and see it for a $1!!

  • kerbear585

i don't really want the 3-D aspect. i am not a fan of it. feel like i am twitching and stuff the whole time watching it. i hope that the 67% that don't want it that way will stand their ground and make an impact. but if it is in fact part 2-D and then 3-D i will still watch it and own the dvd's.

  • Kamilla

Guys its amazing idea making the movie Half 3D, Coz how else can u describe in the movie the vertual feelings that Bella was going through! Amazing IDEA, BRAVO!!!!!
I hope u wont disapoint us!

  • crbrwer

No 3D please, no need the story is what we Love.

  • nancie

I think that they shouldn't do it in 3-D I understand that they want to do everything in 3D but not Twilight. It's just fine having it be 2D.

  • LegHitchThis

“My wife’s an OB-GYN so we should bring her on set to make sure that if Edward is going to do an oral Cesarean, he really needs to make the proper incision with his teeth.”

How hard can it be? I thought the incision would be pretty obvious.. :)

  • mickey_lamb

i dont care if its in 3D because 3D gives me a headache haha…
i think the birth scene need to be in jacobs POV… it is still his part of the book lol… why steal that from him? :D
i think filming the birth scene in bellas POV will be cheating, since they dont have to show much because bella is half dead… it will be very disappointing if they film the birth scene in bellas POV…

  • Lolfungirl12

I like the 3-D 2nd movie idea because you have to admit that it will be hard to show vampire perspective in only 2-D.
And i did love incite into Jake’s thoughts. It shows that no matter what happens, Jake still cares about Bella and he will always be apart of her life.

  • Rebecca

Why do 13 and younger children even need to see a movie about vampires, anyway? I believe that if they’re not mature enough to see a short, and non-graphic sex scene, with blood in the film, they shouldn’t see it. I mean, Bella’s birth is bloody and supposed to be graphic, and they’d be taking one of my favorite parts out. I want to see a more “adult-like” Twilight film this time around. Why be afraid of showing blood? It’s a vampire movie, for Christ’s sake! They should stick to the book a lot for this one. What’s so wrong with a PG-14 movie? It also shouldn’t be in 3-D because the others weren’t. What would we truly see through Bella’s eyes? Just a foggy haze of Jacob, Edward, and blood?

I guess it’ll be what they want it to be. All I’m wanting is acting and blood. More blood that all the other three films combined, that’s for sure. Do you think they’ll even show blood, coming from Bella’s view?
